Personally a good buffalo hunt is better; but that is my subjective opinion. For me Elephant hunting for trophy bulls may/can become boring unless you are in a prime area with a lot of bulls to look at, close in on etc. Generally speaking there is a lot more interaction (glassing/tracking/getting into position) if hunting for a quality buffalo. Whereas elephant hunting can be a helluva lot of walking, checking roads for tracks and chasing tracks with little joy or maybe not even seeing an elephant after hours of walking.

If you can afford to go to a good area, have a good PH, are happy to end many a day empty handed, love walking and are a focused person with a definite goal then you will enjoy hunting elephant.

I've been fortunate to have hunted African game of over 50 varieties, including the Big 5. The only one I ever dreamed about AFTER killing it was Elephant. Incredible!

I have been on two elephant hunts one for a tuskless and one for a bull. The tuskless was my first african animal, shot within the first hour on the first day of my safari. There was no drama, we approached the herd, the tuskless was on our side of the herd, we went in, couple of shots later it was all over.

My second elephant hunt was for a bull. I had decided I wasn't shooting anything under 50lbs. With that in mind we hunted hard for 15 days walked several miles including one marathon walk over 20 miles, came within feet of some massive bodied bulls and had a particular hairy time on one occassion face to face with a wall of elephants of over 50 cows and calves but I never pulled the trigger on that hunt.

At the end of the day, each to his own. But I would say hunting for a big bull elephant is probably one of the greatest hunting experiences. I concede that cows might be more dangerous and thrilling than shooting of a bull but to me the hunt is the quest, the tracking, the anticipation and finally closing in on the bull of your dreams.

Hunting elephant is without doubt a special experience unlike no other hunt.
