It is with much sadness that I inform you of the passing of one of Zambia's most experienced and liked Profesional Hunters. Abie dies last night in a hunting camp. Abie on the far left of this photograph is with his brother Johnny Du Plooy.

My sincerest condolences to the families of the Du Plooys.

Andrew,

Nice pix with Abie and his ever present beer.

Would liked to have been able to spend more time with Abie to learn more of his experiences in the Luangwa when black rhino were common. Abie was a controversial character to say the least but most clients loved him.

I've passed our condolences on to his family.

Mark

I spent a large portion of my Zambia hunting time with or around Abie.

Those that knew him, understood his often "untimely comments." I got him, understood him and appreciated him. Killed My Kafue Lechwe and a few other endemic Zambia species with him.

I had a first timer with me one year. He wanted a Kafue Lechwe and a Sable. We hunted Blue Lagoon one morning, then Sean Parks game farm in Mazabuka for a giant old Sable bull that they had.

There was no finer story teller than the very unique Abie duPlooy.

May you enjoy the bush in the hereafter.

Steve

My husband and I hunted with Abie our first safari to Zambia. Had the best time ever! We never had a camp staff that adored their PH more than Abie’s guys did!
We stayed with his wife and family at the end of our Safari! Most polite and loved bunch of kids! My condolences to all.

Best regards, D. Nelson

Met Abie in 2010 in camp when we hunted with Johnny. Our condolences to the du Plooy family for their loss.

I received a call from Zambia today that Abie had passed. My daughter and I hunted the Schifulo GMA with him in October 2019 and we had kept in communication with Abie since. During our time with him we got all Abie had to offer. While on one hand Abie could be a little "crusty", on the other hand what I saw was a man's man with a lifetime of experience in the bush who treated my 25 year old daughter like a lady with the utmost patience and respect, and was a man who also loved his wife and young adopted daughter immensely.

Hunting with Abie was one of the highlights of our trip. During our downtime I was reading White Hunter or one of the other books out there about the great PH's of days long gone and Abie talked about the days, early in his career when he spent time with Capstick and others who were in the later days of theirs. I told Abie then that I was confident my kids would be reading about him one day in a future print of the same.

Abie will be missed. And I can only hope that I can exit this world and enter the next while at my hunting camp doing the things that I love to do.

RIP my friend.

Sam

You are a good man Larry. I would hope DSC frontline could consider a contribution.

We are getting approval from the family first. Then we will proceed.

I have contacted the Frontline Foundation (FF). We need to know more about his death. As I understand it, the FF was formed to help those who were killed or injured while hunting.

That’s a shame.

I too had met Abie in Zambia.

While a bit unconventional, he was a hoot to be around!

Condolences to his family.

Very sad for his family and friends, but to die in a hunting camp in Africa, peaceful during sleep, that isn't the worst way to go. But it should have been a few decades later.

RIP Abie.

Home comes the hunter...

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
- Rudyard Kipling

Life grows grim without senseless indulgence.
