Trophy Shipment and robbery

I have received the shipping estimates from Worldwide Logistics and Coppersmith fees and they practically amount to robbery. I had a shipment of capes and horns that weighed 321 lbs. shipped in 2004 that cost a total of $647.00. I went to Atlanta and picked them up at Danzas and took them to my tannery. I just got an estimate for 2 capes and two Buff horns that weigh 84 lbs and the shipping cost, documentation blah blah blah was $1315.00 plus Coppersmith to handle them for another $490.00. Has everyone been paying fees like this or am I the lone ranger? And what is with the power of attorney that Coppersmith makes you sign? I have never used Coppersmith before, do you guys that have do this??? This seems like a fleecing of the hunter to me.

I have not used Coppersmith, but am getting ready to. I have used Fauna and Flora in the past and was not surprised at the shipping costs (though they're always high). Your experience makes me think I may need to speak to Fauna and Flora as well for the shippment that's sitting in Bulawayo for me right now.

I believe the power of attorney allows them to act for you in clearing Customs. I have mine around here somewhere. I can't remember what I paid but it was a bit less; however, I did not have buff.

I am not giving you legal advice on the power of attorney. You will have to seek your own counsel before deciding what to sign. I imagine they will give you the option of clearing the shipment yourself. You can call or email them with questions.

My last trip was a no-trophy, no export hunt. I figure that savings is my airfare for the next trip (if there is one) and maybe some trophy fees.

I just got back from Zim and only took 2 trophies and was doing the math to see if it was worth the cost to get them back. If you go to the Coppersmith Q&A website it details their minimum costs, which when I added them up came up to around $500 to $600. Add to that the $600 dip and pack fee then freight it just wasn't worth it. The whole thing ended up being around $800+ PER animal to get them back and it was just not worth it to me (even though my kudu went 54 inches!) I'm with Charles - I'd rather spend that money on another hunting trip, but to each his/her own.

I will bring trophies back again, but taking a non-trophy trip allowed me to get back sooner and gives me some time to save for the next trip. If I had been hunting buffalo or leopard it would have been a different matter, but hunting tuskless I was not going to add the dip/pack/ship costs just for a warthog or something.

Just wanted to be clear that I have not given up on trophies completely, but the hunt is stil the most important part for me.

Sticker shock can suck. I will tell you that the inflation rate for frieght has been horrible for two years now. The price for clearance with Coppersmith doesn't seem that bad as far as competitors go. It is important to pre-pay your frieght. If it goes freight collect the mark-up on your invoice here will really shock you. I don't think you are really getting robbed just the cost to play was higher than you expected. Good luck.

There are a number of export shippers, so check around. Good news is, you now can ship raw trophies via Ocean cargo. The trip takes 30 days but it is cheaper than going air freight which takes 7 days...or so at a much higher cost. LDK

I got my shipping info today,,, from Reiser Tax/ IFN Airfrieght Logistics. To my taxidermists agent in San Francisco I looked at the bill just for shipping and almost had a heart attack,,, it was in Namibian dollars at over 9800.00 dollars which converted to US dollars was still over 1100.00 dollars but after seeing the first amount I was able to breath. Then I will pay the agent around 500 bucks or more to claim it plus shipping to Texas..

you can make more money, you can not make more time

I was told by a shipping agent that the only port you can do ocean cargo to is New York and from there it would have to be ground tranportation to final destination. Also, that there had been much difficulty in clearing customs which caused delays and storage fees. In the ground transport and storage fees most people were nit seeing much of a savings over air transport.

How have people's experience that have used ocean cargo gone?

After going back and checking my costs I see that last year it cost me $712 in air freight to have 123 lbs. shipped from Windhoek to Atlanta. Coppersmiths charged me $420 to clear everything.

David Culpepper,

I'm not sure the shipping agent was giving you the straight word, but the ocean cargo shipping through Fauna and Flora in New York [see above] is certainly effective for a shipment to the east coast states, and I know they ship further west as well. [ the same 1200 mile to Clearwater would get to Des Moines, Ia going straight west.]

On my shipment it seems to have been about a toss up - Air Cargo vs Ocean Cargo, as my crate is fairly small. The bigger the crate/crates the bigger the savings Ocean vs Air freight, it appears.

For me, being in not THAT much of a hurry, the convenience of dealing with F&F and getting a package "door-to-door" price was/is worth paying a little more.

As to comparison to last years prices, this shipment is about 1/3 higher than it was to have been last year.

I hope this help.

Les
