Will be spending one night in Joberg on the way to Namibia. Aside from the Afton House which I'm sure is great, are there other, cheaper places you'd recommend to get a nites sleep? Thanks

We stayed in the Protea inside the airport back in February. Staff was good but the room wasn't. Airconditioner didn't work (it was hot), shower didn't work, so only a bath was available. Bathroom fixtures looked like acid had eaten away at them, and the room was full of roaches. I would avoid it myself unless you could inspect the room before paying. LDK

There's plenty of moderately priced B&Bs around the airport and I'd think a quick search on the net would find you plenty.

Alternatively, there's the Holiday Inn just off the airport, again a quick search will find their info and rates........ All you do to get there, is go to the bus station which is a couple of hundred yards from the terminal and find their courtesy bus....... They recently refurbished the hotel and it's now pretty nice and even better is they keep the hookers out of the place.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn you mentioned back in '93. I found the courtesy bus because of the kindness of a local who directed me (lugging bag and rifle case and metal ammo box) The inn stored evrything for me in a hotel safe. I remember the place as quite luxurious for a Holiday Inn. It had a great smorgasbord breakfast table that I still remember. Don't remember the hookers, though. Of course, that might be because I had always led a sheltered life and wouldn't know about such matters. Smiler

There was a time a few years ago that a guy on his own was almost afraid to to go into the bar on his own there! - I remember you even had to time the lift doors right or they'd follow you in to proposition you...... hell, I even had to throw one out of the damn lift once! Roll Eyes

But nowadays, they have 4 guys on standing in reception to keep the girls out....... it works a treat and I always stay there now...... Wink

If you do a search on the net, you'll even find they often have real cheap deals as well.....

Not sure why you are not staying at the Afton House??? -- The accommodations and service are well worth the price. Their airport service alone is worth vastly more than any amount they might charge. Their man at the airport save me almost a couple hundred $'s when SAA tried to rip me off on baggage charges -- that alone was worth every penny and I will stay with them again and again.

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

Haven't been in 2 years but prior to that I always stayed at the Holiday Inn Garden Court which I believe is in Kempton. I think last time I stayed there it was no longer a Holiday Inn. They had a shuttle bus to and from the airport that ran every few minutes and was only a couple of bucks. The breakfast was an outstanding buffet and the steak house had very good staeks. Don't drink so was never in the bar. Rooms were spacious quiet and clean. Above all it was inexpensive. It is still called the Garden Court and I always just made my reservations on line. I stayed overnite there for 8 years straight and reccommend it highly.

If Afton House is to expensive you need to stay at home. They will pick you up and as already stated they will treat you like family. They simply are the best and very reasonable.

Yes Afton is always a good bet, but if you want to share it around a bit and try another good option !!!

Then maybe consider staying with ex: Zimbo's (Terry and Gloria Browning) at the following link

If you are going hunting and traveling with firearms, Afton would be the place to stay. If I were there for other reasons, I might consider another location.

The two times I stayed in Joberg I stayed at one of the two Holiday Inns near the airport. I found out the hard way there were two when we took the wrong courtesy van to the Holiday Inn Garden Court. I had to bribe the van driver to take us to the right Holiday Inn as he was very reluctant to take us there, he wanted to take us back to that zoo of an airport. It was for good reason he didn't want to go to the "other" Holiday Inn, I thought they were going to lynch him when we pulled up. More bribes/tips and everyone calmed down.

Regardless, the rooms were clean, everything worked, there were a few gift shops and a pool (too cold), there were no shady characters loitering about, there was a steakhouse attached to the hotel (the Spur it was called), they had a reasonable breakfeast buffet for 6 rand and a cheap shuttle to the airport.....but that was all 10 years ago.

That "other" Holiday Inn is the Intercontinental Holiday Inn. Stayed there once but one must be careful after leaving the airport proper to catch the correct van to the correct HI. The Intercontinental had a terrific evening buffet and the bar was very nice but the beer was served just a tad too warm for my tastes. The rooms were comfortable and the security seemed fine. No problems. This HI IS on the airport grounds. However, good as this was, when I go back I think I would like to try the Afton House based on what I read on AR. What a marvelous source of information this forum is.

If you want to be by yourself the Holiday Inn is fine. If you prefer to be around other hunters the Afton House is fine. I've stayed at both; no complaints.

Gotta go with Steve on the airport Holiday Inn. Stayed there a lot doing crew rest. Restaurant was good,(great chicken sandwiches with mayo and the beer is on draft, cold, and tasty), no hookers, the place is clean and the rooms are just fine. Great for a one-nighter.

Last time I did that trip it was possible to make a same day connection that got us into Windhoek around 4 pm if memory serves. Why stay in RSA (and deal with all that gun permit BS) when you can be in Namibia same day? Yes, it's a long flight but by that time you are so comatose another two hours doesn't make any difference.

And it's Joburg, at least it was when I lived there.

One of the main reasons I prefer a hotel to the Afton is that in a hotel, I can get a meal right there without having to bugger about going out somewhere else.........
