Has anyone used 180gn 30 cal accubonds on planes game? I would be interested to hear of any experiences, game taken, cartridges used, etc.

Not really trying to be a smart aleck, and not trying to provoke flames, and maybe those accubonds will work great, but I can't help but wonder why its worth giving a lot of thought or consideration that these will be any better or advantagous than already proven and very well known bullets like 200 grain partitions, A frames, or northforks? I suspect Barnes TSX in this weight and caliber are also A#1, although my personal experience with these particular bullets is limited to .338, .375 and .416 (these were just fine). For what it is worth (free advice, hence not much) in .308 cal I've used the heavy NF with desired effects on plains game. I guess if my rifle only shot accubonds well (although I'd rather then take another rifle).....or if I planned to make 400 yard shots on small animals with a .308 Win or .30-06 (and put in the requisite practice to do so).....? Many things will probably work, at least some of the time, and other things are known to work nearly all of the time.

YOu might do a search for Accubonds on the forum. Several folks including BobC had great success with Accubonds in their 375 H&H rifles.

I don't recall a 30 cal report?

Fergus, sorry I can't speak for the .30 caliber line, but I have used the 280/7mm Accubonds (160 grain) in two of my rifles and they not only shoot very accurately, but perform extremely well on PG. Within the last year I have taken 13 big game animals with said bullet from Whitetail Deer to Waterbuck ranging from 117 to 297 yards with no problems. The few bullets I have recovered have shown good expansion with lead remaining on the jacket petals (bonded). One of my clients now shoots them in his 270 with the same results. Good hunting, LDK

Fergus,

I used them back in 2004. I was 10 shots 10 animals down until I saw the big spiral horns of the kudu. First shot went far back and the second dropped him.

The PH was amazed at performance on game. My gemsbock was killed at 250 yards and that was one shot also, he dropped in his tracks.

I shot the Federal Premium Ammo with 180 Grain Accubonds. I couldn't have asked for any better ammo or performance.

I used 180 Grain Accubonds from a 300 WM to take Kudu, Zebra, Gemsbok, and Springbok. All one shot kills. 180 to 320 yards. Also used them to take a bull moose at about 40 yards. Didn't take a step.

I sent Nosler a detailed report on the 180's from my .300WM and their performance on 16 plainsgame animals. Its a bit long for this thread probably so I just sent it to you as a PM. In short: they did very well.

FWIW, I shot a couple of mule deer does with 165gr accubonds this year frommy 308 with unspectacular results. They hopped off and dies shortly after.

Fergus I have NEVER shot African game (but hope to one day) but for what it's worth I have shot 30 or so head of Aussie game with the 200 gr Nos Accubonds form a .300 RUM loaded to around 3200 fps and those Nos accubonds have gone through on a couple of occasions where I did not shoot that great heavy spine , hip bones and muscle all up a foot and a half of meat and bone and have exited with a golf ball sized hole. I think for your plains game trip they'd be fine maybe step up to the 200 gr nos ab and it will slow it a little and expand even a little less. They are definitely harder than the plain old Ballistic tips.
