I begin to be tired of all this people that goes hunting in these ways such 45-70 rifles for dagga boys, or lions with 38 spl revolver, maybe with 2" barrel like a S&W Airweight, and so on ..... they should have to hunt with an assegai, it should be better.

This was related in the book FOOTSTEPS OF AN IVORY HUNTER; by Ian Nyschens.

It happened to Jim Levenderis, a PH.

He was asleep in his tent, when a lioness walked into his tent. He was under a mosquito net. The lioness was half in and half out of the tent. He decided to fire a couple of shots over her head to scare her off.

The effect of that was the exact opposit, as she jumped into the tent. And in the ensuing struggle, he shot her three times - the barrel was touching her skin.

He survived without a scratch!!

At least the self defense aspect of the story is easier to swallow than it would be if some fool had actually tried to purposely hunt the beast with a .38 special.

I was shot by a fellow 20 years ago with a .22 LR from a revolver at point blank range. The bullet entered my left jaw and is sitting next to my 2nd cervical vertebrae perfectly mushroomed. Did not exit or kill me. In fact it hardly even stunned me. Did make my mouth where it would not open for a month though. So I might have starved to death in the wild.

In a previous life I was a farmhand and routinely watched or on my own shot cows and bulls weighing up to 1600 lbs. between the eyes with a 22 LR. They all went down like a sack of hammers. Only a very few were stunned. The majority had their skulls cracked and died before they regained any sense of consciousness.
However, I never had one charging at me at which I surely would have missed and ruined not only a pair of underwear but perhaps a fairly good body, my own that is.

Yes, a .22 LR can kill a Lion. Back in the early 80s, a PH friend of mine in Zimbabwe told me about his neighbor that killed a Lion with his .22. It seems the guy heard a ruckus in his stock pens one night and went outside with only a flashlight and .22 rifle. As he approached the gate, a grown male Lion jumped out of the corral with a young calf in his mouth. As the Lion took off running, the guy opened up and emptied eleven rounds at the Lion. The Lion dropped the calf, but it was dead, so the guy didn't dare go off into the night looking any further. The next day they found the Lion dead, just over 100 yards away. Upon inspection, one round penetrated his lungs. That was the only fatal wound they found. Others were non fatal. I was told the rancher was totally shocked, as he only expected to "burn his ass up" and run him off. LDK

I don't know how many of you folks have been within a few feet of a lion bent on killing. From personal experience, a lion, from 350 to 500 pounds huge and with blood on his face, makes you wish you had, not a gun, but a channel changer.

I vomited when it was over, and I'm not one bit embarassed to admit it. Maybe I shit my britches, too, but only the laundry boy knows?

Hell yes you could kill a lion with a puny pistol, but if you go forth so armed, your nuts are bigger than mine. Up close and personal, the vicious sons-of-bitches scare the crap of any sane man. They are the Kings of the Jungle.

And, God willing, I'll be back amonst them in 20 days!

I just grew up in a rough oilfield town and a fellow that had a beef with me when I was younger walked up and shot me in the face with a .22 pistol. It was as simple as that. I do have lots of X-rays of it that I have taken over the years as I am an equine orthopedic surgeon. I will post them some time if y'all want to see them.

All I would be wishing for is a .454 casull!!!

Which reminds me of what an old Texas Ranger told me once. There is only one good reason to carry a .45 and that is 'cause they don't make a .46!!!

Heck, I'd rather have a tent mate who was into lathering herself in some kind of funky grease... and in a separate cot, ex post facto, as we lawyers say. That'd save on the daily rate and return air. We've all heard that when DG hunting, you don't have to run fast, just faster than the guy behind you (or smell good to eat like a tasty chippie, perhaps). Now in PG only country, a greasy tent mate (female of course), ain't such a bad deal, anti facto or not!... don't laugh, us old farts have to dream, too.

Kidding aside, on my first trip to lion country, I wondered why an askari spent the night with a panga outside my tent. When the "Mmmmuuuuuaaaarraahhhhh's" started, and after I wet my bed, I figured it out.

There are some sounds that thrill my soul. A South Georgia gobbler coming in... a 370 bull elk raking a tree at 40 yards, a hyena scraping along the boma inches from my bed, a thrumpting bull elephant pissed with my intrusion, and a leopard coughing while he tears flesh from a bushbuck... but there is only one king.. and those wonderful tawny animals that tickle my soul... and 20 days away. I can't wait, a screwed up Tanzanian government or not. I'm counting the seconds.

Quick story along these lines I once read about in one of the outdoor magazines..a guy who took a Cape Buff with a .45 acp.

His rifle failed and no back up, so he climbed a tree. The buff hung around apparently waiting him out, so he took off his shirt and pants and stuffed them with leaves to make a dummy and dangled it using his belt. The buff charged and he shot it. And it charged again and again and each time he shot it again. Finally it started slowing and he saw it was exhaling foamy blood. Eventually it dropped.

Maybe someone else remembers that. Just interesting...
