Good letter, but there was no mention of China's investment in the Continent or more especially the new railroad that has recently been proposed. I suspect that China's "investment" in Africa is more detrimental to elephants and other species than most anything else. But that's just MHO.

Wanna bet whether he gets a meaningful reply?

a letter from a ranking Senator will certainly not get a generic( canned) response. the devil will be in the details provided. my guess is those details will few and vague, since there seems to be little scientific data to support the action.

My money is on never. I sure didn't get any response and I sent him three very informative emails.

Dan Ashe answers to Sally Jewel...who answers to Barack Obama...who answers to no one and does whatever he pleases.

That said...the tide may be starting to shift in the politics of DC and USF&W may starting thinking about its future as well.

3) Has your office been made aware of activities related to foreign acquisition of conservation assets that are the result of bribery or other inappropriate financial transactions to facilitate harvesting of protected species including the African elephant?

a. What are the most recent activities you have been made aware of and do any of the land/property acquisitions include Middle Eastern investors?

b. Are you aware of any foreign advertising campaigns to illegally harvest or otherwise take protected or endangered species, including the African elephant, from Zimbabwe or Tanzania?

c. Given the research you have done in regards to global corruption on these issues, have you discovered or acquired any evidence that governmental officials within the United Arab Emirates or other Middle Eastern governments have been involved in efforts to harvest African elephants in large numbers that are unsustainable?

Saeed,
Can you shed any light on what this paragraph is all about?

As I said in another post, two of us met with Senator Vitter on May 8th. His knowledge of the situation was far better than I expected and his staffer's knowledge was excellent.

While the letter may not contain all the questions we would like asked, it is greatly appreciated and hopefully will receive attention at the USF&W. Please encourage your representative to follow suit and also request them to sign the "Dear Colleague" letter calling on USFWS to repeal the ban. Congressman Young was one of the originators of the "Dear Colleague" letter.

David Vitter is actually asking the USFWS to use verified facts and good research - combined with logic, intelligence, and reason - before they make a decision. But, Obama (and his cronies) will not allow this approach to trump their self-righteous ideological politics - don't hold your breath.

Sally Jewel will try to make USF&W tow the liberal line for a while...but the Service will have to eventually look to the future as they will surpass the Monarchy we live in today. So if they want future funding...they may start to listen to Congressmen before too long.

Thanks for sharing the letter, this appears to be one of the first signs that Congress actually gives a rip about this issue.

It is nice to see that not all the politicians are playing dodge ball on this issue. The garbage form letters from my Montana members of Congress were particularly disheartening given that they are hunters. Elections do terrible things to otherwise intelligent people!

In my experience (not just an opinion as I have dealt with them professionally for more than 20 years) the USFWS is a rogue agency that has completely abandoned scientific principles on many different issues and operates primarily as an "anti" advocacy group yet wields some very destructive regulatory power.

hunt99. I got the same crap from Mt reps. I got so pissed, I emailed them all literally calling them numb nuts and told them to disband USFWS. And I'm pretty easy going. That kinda behavior is inexcusable.

They definitely NEED to feel the power-of-the-purse-strings!
