A friend has recently booked his first safari to the Save for next year. He booked an all plains game safari but while we were chatting the other day I mentioned that if he could find an RSA plains game hunt for this year at a good price he might want to take that and then upgrade his 2008 hunt to include buff after having had the experience of this year's pg hunt. He then asked me if I'd come along with him this year and I replied that the only pg species I'd like to have at this point is a very good nyala, and perhaps a cape bushbuck. I then called the outfitter in RSA I hunted with a couple of years ago but he was booked up. Does anyone know of a good outfitter in KZN who could do a pg/nyala hunt this year? I'd be after only a good nyala and bushbuck but Jeff'd like a representative bag of pg. Cancellations/last minute hunts are all do-able. I'd especially like to hunt Mark SSutherland's ranch for nyala but I don't know how good the rest of the pg are on his ranch.

You might like to try Jaco Human, Lochi or Jakkals, who all post here.......I'm sure there's others on the forum who should also be able to help you with something...... although you might have to be a little flexible on dates......

We book for Mark Sutherland so we can answer your questions. Mark Sutherland has first rate Nyala and Red Duiker. These are the "signature" species. He has plenty of impala but the genetics are such that the horn length is not impressive...but at $225 each who is counting inches? In addition, lots and lots of warthogs (good ones among them, and cheap at $175 each), plenty of grey duiker and steenbok, and good numbers of zebra and blue wildebeest. Some Reedbuck, habitat is not ideal for Reedbuck. Some Bushbuck, they compete with Nyala and the Nyala have the upper hand in this area. There are good Kudu as well but not large numbers. This is one of the few places left where you can kill a 50" plus kudu for only $890 though. Now here's the "catch". NO hunting from or near vehicles. Strictly fair chase. And no hunting near camp..that waterhole is a safety zone. After speaking with an outfitter yesterday, a possible alternative came up. I could spend the time needed to get a good nyala and maybe a Cape bushbuck (already have the Limpopo variety) in KZN and Jeff may take a few indigenous animals, too, then we head on over to the Limpopo area for the rest of Jeff's pg. I'd just go along as an observer to film his hunt. This would require more days but Jeff would probably have a better opportunity for his pg. And I'd just hate to have to go to the Limpopo and tool around a few days PM's sent.
