Just curious what people thought of the move from Reno to Vegas next year. Good bad, otherwise?

I see they will be adding about 500 more booths in vegas....too big do you think.

Would like to hear from people that regularly attend.

I just think it is a bad idea all around. SCI polled the exhibitors and I reckon the exhibitors wouldnt have voted for it and I dont know anyone who did. I can understand why some members mighyt prefer Vegas but overall it is a very bad move and a change that SCI will regret in the future.

What makes it worse is they are planning to move between Vegas and Reno alternately and that will make it doubly hard for exhibitors.

I am at a loss as to why we have to move..... Reno is fabulous but it is pretty damn good for a bunch of hutning folk!!

I do not care for Vegas. Too glitzy for me. I will probably try DSC next year for a change. The wives might prefer Vegas, though.

Vegas has a lot more flights in and out and is a lot easier to get a non-stop to than Reno.

Sixes for me as we tend to drive to the show, and it is 10 hours either way. Airfare might be a little cheaper now, and there are more flights for me to choose from out of Idaho Falls.

My wife likes Vegas, and will start attending the show again when it is down there. One time in Reno was enough for her, and there's just not that much for non-hunters there.

Talking with Reno residents-cabbies-service workers in restaurants, etc., they will sure miss us. That is a very good week for them.

Vegas: More flights, cheaper flights, cheaper rental cars, cheaper hotels, more hotels, more restaurants. I'm not a gambler so Vegas isn't my favorite place, but it is relatively affordable and easy to get flights.

I like Reno okay but it is a much more expensive city to travel to and stay in. I've never rented a car (and I have rented a lot of them) that was as expensive as in Reno.

For me it's the weather, and flights. Flights more expensive, and the weather usually bad, delaying flights. Vegas I can drive to easier.

Personally I'm not a big fan of Vegas, but I do like the idea of SCI being there because it is easier to get to. Also I can probably talk my wife into Vegas, shows, shopping, etc. She's done Reno once and doesn't intend to do it again. Is Dallas still scheduled for the year after next? That could be interesting.

I like Vegas better although Reno isn't bad.

I can get to Vegas on a dirt cheap 45min flight and there's WAY more to do in LV when the show is over each evening.

They are not doing Dallas next year, Back to Reno. The problem I am hear about Veags is it will be very expensive to have a booth and most convention workers are union which will cost a ton of money just for set up. In Vegas SCI is a small convention and In Reno it's a big convention, I believe the powers that be wanted it to be easier to get in and out of, which it will be. I think Most exhibitors will not be happy.

Thanks!

Exhibitors are not happy for the very reason you mentioned. It's a union show which means you can't even set up your own booth and must pay a union man to hang photos, plug in your lights, etc. Ridiculous. SCI is taking big heat from the exhibitors over this and rightfully so.

SCI is welcomed by everyone in Reno and they treat us very well since we make their entire winter season. Whereas in Vegas we are just another show and are treated rudely by taxi drivers, service staff, etc. They know there are other shows in town at the same time and more to follow. Reno is a town of hunters; vegas is a town of gamblers and people with their hand out.

SCI is in Vegas for the money. More vendor space, and SCI doesn't need to be larger; it's too large already. The longest security lines I've ever been in were at McLaren airport (Vegas) and in 15 years of SCI conventions I've never had a delay coming or going via air to Reno. Vegas will be much more expensive for vendors due to the unions. SCI doesn't need more jewelry, furniture and fur booths.

Every vendor I know is unhappy. The union deal is bad and many of us store our booths in Reno and now are screwed into buying all new stuff or taking it in the rear from Freeman Decorating. But when did SCI ever worry about vendors. Sic'em DSC !!!!

400+/- miles to Reno, 700+ to Vegas. I drove the Jag down last week, and a couple days we had the top down in the evening. 55-60 degrees.

Last year at the SHOT Show I saw snow.

I prefer Reno, it just seems a lot more intimate setting.

There will be a full week between the SHOT Show and SCI. Two 1500 mile round trips a week apart. That sucks.

I like Reno and my wife always comes. I dislike Vegas, my wife loves it so maybe she'll go without me.

I get the feeling this move is all about money for SCI. They'll have 2 levels and as stated earlier about 500 more exhibiters. I don't know what their going to do when they try to move back to Reno, throw out the 500 extra exhibiters that don't want to pay a higher price.

I am very happy it's going to Las Vegas!! Reno is fine and the people are nice, but getting in and out is a royal pain in the butt and much more expensive that Vegas. I understand that exhibitors will be upset, but it is a much better deal for members attending. I will be headed to Vegas!

Hey Dave, maybe a bunch of us with storage in Reno can get together and drive a big U-Haul truck down to Vegas?? Road Trip??? dancing

A bunch of you Texans might bring some pieces with you and we can deal with the union guys in vegas too when we get there?? Maybe all vendors should come armed?? Big Grin

Interesting I was speaking with a guy from Grand Slam and he said they dont have union problems with the sheep show because they paid the unions off. Why couldnt SCI do the same??

I got my staff into Reno with fairly cheap flights, got a good deal on a rental car and an unbelieveable room rate and very cheap meals. In my two trips to Vegas in the past.. NOTHING has been cheap.

Matt G is spot on with his comments about exhibitors problems and cost increases LV vs. Reno.

As far as Show attendees, LV "IS NOT" cheaper in hotel rates, airfares, food, on sight transportation(no shuttle bus in LV, 10X the cab useage and fares involved, rental car not a neccessity in Reno unless you can't stand being in total control of your own ride Roll Eyes; airport shuttles, hotel shuttles, shuttle bus to Show eliminates the need by 99% of needing a rental car there; LV will almost mandate a rental car. Me and my friends paid a whopping $358.00 each for four nights hotel and airfare from Albuquerque,NM. We had to endure a plane change and 45 minute layover in LV(thought we were going to completely stress out because of this Roll Eyes) If a non stop flight is essential to your going to SCI or not, hopefully you never plan to hunt Africa or anywhere else in the World. Kind of a lame excuse if you ask me.

Weather is not really the big issue some pronounce it to be. Just checked the Avg. temps for January in Reno and LV. Reno High49 --Lo 26; LV High 58 - Lo 40. My truck was heated on the way to the airport, shuttle bus to airport, inside airport, plane, shuttle to hotel, hotel, shuttle bus to Show and the Show itself were all HEATED as well. The weather could have been 0 outside and no part of the trip would have been effected. Again, has everyon gotten to be such wusses that this slight temp variation is a deal breaker?

The everyday services in LV will no way compare to the friendly, glad you are here service we receive in Reno.

If you want to go to SCI Vegas just go, nobody needs to justify it through comparisons with Reno it just doesn't add up. Facts are though it will cost more not less, it WILL BE less friendly, but it will still be one heck of Show for those so inclined.

I have never been to SCI, but suppose if I went Vegas would be more convenient. Buuuuutttt I have been to DSC for the last 6 years and it is getting bigger each year. My sources tell me all the major players are in Dallas, so unless I just want a different scene, I can't imagine a reason to travel west when for me and almost anyone direct flights are a cinch to Dallas. Two Thumbs up for DSC

Hey, if Vegas turns any of you off, there's a simple way to handle that. Don't go, or don't sign up for a booth or as a Vendor there. Sit it out and then go back to Reno. If enough outfitters and members did that don't you think SCI would get the picture? Big Grin

UEG - That is exactly right for the attendees and I for one may or not go to LV. It all depends on if I need to pick up some taxidermy from one of the exhibitors and whether Matt G still needs a few bucks. Smiler

It's not that simple for exhibitors however if they should choose to "sit it out" in LV they would lose all their accumulated points and maybe put at the bottom of the list for reinstatement. Wouldn't think many would consider this a viable option.

UEG - I can always send a "gift" along with friends to help Matt's kids in case I choose not to attend. Wink But you are probably right in my attending in LV,as I don't really want to break the long streak of Conventions attended.

It's funny how peoples preceptions of a place, what's good an bad and personal convience are so different. Makes you wonder if they have been to both places to make an accurate comparison? Oh well, to each their own.

Obviously the three or four people you talked to at the Show are greatly outnumbered. Look around here and you will see that. France rates right up there as a $h&$ hole designation for a lot of folks. Enjoy Vegas, you seem the type, even if I have no idea who you are. It's only temporary so make the best of it.
