My best friend was along as photographer. In the cases before we came up to this particular herd, he was always taking pics of the 'wrong' animal. He even got great video of the elephant herd we were stalking ... of course, he was on the wrong bull when the shooting started Smiler .

In the case of this bull he didn't have to ask Smiler .

David,

They mentioned he's 42", but I think they may have measured inside. I didn't check it.

He's still in Zim, hopefully will be here soon. He'll be a shoulder mount by the master, Jerry Huffaker.

His bosses are hard, so he is a good bull, at least I dont' see any hair to shave off him...I probably would have shot him depending on my mood at the time, he does not have a lot of drop and I like drop, but I still doubt that I would have passed him up...He is a very nice bull.

PD,

That is a drop dead beautiful bull. That one kind of flys in the face of the theory that a buff with horn tips above the boss is an immature buffalo.

I like him!

Butch,

You must have forgotten to take you Old Timers drugs. We are talking buffalo here and not moose. In the furure please get Dianne to proof read your posts. Oh! Forget that because you won't be able to remember to ask her.

Oh! Well!

That is a real nice buff PostDriver. I would have plugged it too. Big Grin

A buddy of mine shot one in Zim in '98 that has a real similar curl...looks related!

Its also proof that mature buff don't always have the horn tips below the boss.

Cheers,
Canuck

Which brings up a point. Where are the big bulls in Zimbabwe, or are they simply where you find them?

I'm told in Matetse the average bull is around 36", and a very few might push 40". If that's the case, these don't look like Matetse bulls for sure.

I would probably pass on him as he doesn't have enough drop to be my dream buff. If someone else shot him and I saw him up close I would probably kick myself for passing on him.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Taken in Matetsi 5, 11/07, Ron Oliver, Outfitter.

We saw a lot of those smaller bulls, yes, but many big ones as well. It was very late in the season and they were coming out of Hwange Park for the water.

I'll post a full trip report soon, hopefully.

Kensco,

Where are the big buffalo in Zimbabwe? I can't tell you where they all are but Mokore Safaris on the Save Valey Conservancy averages 40". They only shoot about 10 buffalo there each year but they are all hardheaded and very nice. They also average 40+ on their Coutada 9 in Mozambique. Prices there are the same as in Zimbabwe on the Save.

We saw one big bull in 2006 on Matetsi 2. The PH and trackers go pumped. They said it was extraordinary. He moved off the property before we could get on him. That was in July though. This year it will be September. Maybe the bigger bulls will be there.

Ivan Carter killed a whopper in one of the Metesi units in either November or December of last year.

I hope there's at least one nice hard bull in Chewore South in June.
