While I've never had problems with Larium, my daughters had upset stomachs for the second and third day after taking it this year. No bizzare dreams... but very vivid ones by us all, too.

I had my doc prescribe 250mg Mefloquine -- the generic for Larium. I had no side effects.

Didn't get malaria either. Roll Eyes -TONY

First couple trips I took Larium and though I had very vivid dreams I enjoyed them for the most part. One trip over I remember being a bit emotional at the airport(homesick). A bit out of character but not to the point I would consider it a problem.

My son however got very concerned about flying on one trip.To the point that he was seriously afraid to get on the plane. He flies often and is himself an amatuer pilot so this was way out of character for him.

Next couple trips I did not take anything. Last time over I started having syptoms of Malaria on the flight home and so I took the Malarone treatment protocal. I was right as rain in 48 hours.

Will be in a high risk malaria zone hunting this year and will be on Malarone.

That statement really concerns me, Saeed. I think it's time for an intervention.

I have seen a couple of your safari and T-Rex videos. Admit it, please, for your own good, you and Walter both take Larium every day even while at home, don't you?

You guys are clearly so far gone from Larium abuse that you have no idea of what this awful drug has done to you.

No problems whatsoever?! Yeah, right! You need to quit, cold turkey, then go on a white rice and distilled water diet for the next 90 days, and then report back.

BTW, I like Malarone.

Hi
lariam being around for a long time and some serious kinds of malaria parasites is almost resistant to it. it will give you a false feeling of escurity. please check with your Dr or WHO about your destination and the kind of profylax needed. many kinds of malaria parasite are totaly resistant to quinin and quinin drivates(lariam is too a quinin drivate). more new preparates like artimisin drivates are more relaiable.

I have never taken anything else other than Larium, on my own, but I have no idea what the army gave me, for a prophyalaxis! Still if It was the army doses or simply stress from where I was,I don't know. I did have some pritty exciteing eposodes real, or imagined in South East Asia, on tha army stuff.

I've never had a minutes trouble on Larium. Of course some folks say I'm a little strange when I'm not takeing medicine, so who knows!

We have taken Larium (or the generic version actually) for three trips and the only side effect that I have noticed is it may make me a bit more emotional.

Or maybe that's just Africa!

Have taken Larium for ten years with no adverse effects at all. I dream regularly so have no idea what a night would be without dreams. I took another med for malaria in Belize for two trips but don't know what it was but it was NOT Larium. Had no adverse effects from it either. Both prescribed by the travel clinic at The University Of Arizona which SHOULD know what is the reccommended prophylaxis.

We like to enjoy ourselves, and if popping a few pills help, we do that too.

If you wish to be as happy as we are, please take the following:

300 pills of malarone, 300 pills of larium, 250 pills of aspirin, 250 pills extra strong pandole and 100 pills of your favorite halucinagin.

Crush everything into powder, mix with one bottle of Johny Walker White label whiskey, one bottle vodca and one bottle California red wine.

Drink one glass in the morning, one lunch time and one in the evening.

Makesure to stir the mixture before partaking.

Saeed adds one large bottle of tabasco because he likes his hot.

This will scramble your brain far enough to think straight like Saeed.

never had a problem with either Larium or malarone. Dont use doxycycline as a matter of habit. 1) I dont do well in the sun with it. I am one of the lucky ones who is photo sensitive. I will use it to treat tick fever however when needed. 2) The biggest reason I dont use Doxy is that many of the areas I travel to the endemic strains of malaria are resistant to it. So I just dont use it at all and dont hve to remember what areas are a problem. Just one morre thing I dont have to put on the to do lists each time. The only intervention needed is for us to realise that the average life of a trophy room is twenty years yet we still fill up as much space as possible with our art and trophies that wont mean anything except to otthers of our band but the suffer the same aflicttions we all do short of some rathernsadistc theory on what it is approppriate

Wendell, all,

Here is an alternative my girlfriend found, DEMAL200. She is a Dr. and requested all of the test reports from the Dr. who is using it. She also got the ingredients and reviewed them as well. She is very pleased with the the info and will be personally using it next September in Zim.

It is a natural product and hence not pushed by most physicians.

sorry but anything listed on a website named blueturtlegroup. com is a little too homeopathic for me. i guess it is just the physician in me( then again i feel the same way about St. John's wort and a lot of other homeopathic bullshit). personally, Lariam has worked just fine for me on 8 safaris with no side effects. that equals 46-48 weeks of treatment.

Out of 105 people who have taken the poll so far, if you eliminate the answer "Have not taken XXX drug" you come up with the following results.

53% of the people who have taken Larium had problems.
38% Who have taken Doxy have had problems
12% of people who have taken Malarone have had problems

The Malaria Profylaxis of choice is:
60 people Malarone (57%)
25 people Larium (24%)
15 people Doxy (14%)
5 people Other (5%)

I would consider this pretty substantial. Also conssider that the numbers are skewed a bit toward having problems with any drug simply because you are in Africa. Lots of "bugs" everywhere. It is not uncommon to experience digestive problems, to put it politely.

I suspect that some of the problems people report with each drug are results of this. Still, the spread is quite significant.

Sure, 105 people does not represent a huge cross section, but the numbers do fall in line with what I have experienced.

Cheers.

Hi Will,

Yes, they have ran clinical trials, she was given the results and studied them at length. I cant tell you any details as I did not personally review them. If your interested, I can get them from her and forward to you.
We are going to be in Zim for 3 weeks next year and in her preperations, she started investigating malaria prevention and discovered this product. After her review, she decided it was an effective product and has chose to use herself in lieu of Malarone or Larium.
As far as Good Karma, I have no idea.... I'm a republican Smiler

It seems everyone - including the animals - are perfectly safe from Walter's rifle.

Except himself.!

He is the only person I have ever heard off who has shot himself so many times.

One time, someone doctored his mosquito repellent, and added liquid sugar to it.

You should have seen the cloud of flies that followed him around! clap

NO, it was NOT me who did it either!

Walter has made many friends who like to look after him.

You can google the drugs and the manufactures actually have all their info available from side effects to clinical trials. It includes where it was tested and on how many individuals and at what ages. How many people completed the studies and why they dropped out, whether side effects, or whatever, their ages, etc. The info even includes human volunteer studies who let themselves be bitten by infected. Not sure I would volunteer for that project.....Glaxo manufctures Melarone and they have very detailed info on their drugs available which also lists known interactions with other drugs,,,,,,, including interaction with tetracyclines...

I have used Larium on all 3 of my trips to Zim.

I start taking it earlier than recommended, and when I get back I take it longer than recommended. I do not want to get Malaria.

In total I have taken it for over 250 days with no problems.

In fact it seems to "relax and steady out" my normal dreams. Big Grin

I have often posted negatively about the dreams Larium has given me- Hitler dressed as little bo peep, being a female croc and having to remodel the flat Eeker etc, but am reminded of one
...leopard crawling across an acre of tits covered in baby oil...
that one was worth going back for dancing. Perhaps I will have to try some more Larium
