I will be going to Namibia next week to hunt klipspringee. I was wondering what lenght horns I should look for since it will probably be the only one I shoot?

Since it may be the only one you ever take, six inches would be super nice! It takes just over 4 inches to make Roland Ward minimums. Records are made to be broken. Be patient.
Good hunting,
LDK

Here's a 5 1/2" Klipspringer taken in Zimbabwe last October. It was shot with my .375 Model 70 using a Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer at about 150 yards standing clear on the top of a Koppie next to a female.

I took this Klippy on a very enjoyable Safari but I wouldn't have a clue how long the horns are and don't really care.
Just go and enjoy a good hunt.

Samir,

If you hunt hard and hunt well; the inches will take care of themselves.

A word of caution about the Klipspringers. Their hair is almost quill-like, and it does not react well to expanding bullets. A medium/large caliber solid is a good option for the least damage to the cape. Alternatively, shoot a bit further back than you normally would - at least your cape will still be useable for a shoulder mount.

The small antelope are good animals to mount, they don't take up too much wall space... Smiler

Is Klippy the only animal you will hunt or do you have a bigger wish list?

I hunt a fair number of klipspringer and smaller antelope and get very uncomfortable when hunters want to "shoot them a bit further back". So often the animal gets wounded and runs off or needs another shot anyway. My advice is to shoot it properly in the first place and let your taxidermist worry about the damage.

UEG,

You are true to your name! Wink A .375 for a Klippie! Then what caliber for an eland? Confused

Very nice Klippie!

In good hunting.

What mho says is very true. Klipspringer's have hollow hair; similar to our American Pronghorn Antelope, only much more fragile. Taking a tumble off a steep kopje can and will break and damage hair, or quills if you like. Solids have been used with good effect for many Hunters but I'm with Karoo on putting one down on the first shot. My rifle of choice is the .223 pushing 60 grain Nosler Partitions. Take care when placing the crosshairs on these delicate little guys. They might be small but they are big trophies in my book. Congrats to all that posted their pics.

Andrew: Actually I shot a very big eland at 180 yards with my .300 WSM using a Winchester Fail Safe in 2002. That gun seemed to kill everything, usually with just one shot, including the Eland. But again, that was back in 2002, before I owned, or had even thought about owning a .375. I do like the .375 with solids for all of the small stuff and have shot Sharpes Grysbok, Klipspringer, Livingstone's Suni, Red Duiker, Genet Cat and a host of others, as well as the big mean stuff, with it. You, can still place the shot in the vital area lungs mostly just try to avoid the shoulder bone. The less bone you hit the less damage but like others have said too far back and you could wound it. Damn expensive trophy to loose because you worried about the trophy quality. Not easy to track down wounded small critters it took me more than half an hour to track down a wounded steenbuck even if it only went 150 yards small tracks very little blood and can hide anywhere.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.
