Worst Hunting Show Expressions

Unfortunately bland does not get the viewership , very few people seem to want to watch or read unsensationalized hunting stories , look at the plethora of media hunting personalities promoting goods /destinations etc. We have prostituted our industry to the hand rubbing glee of the anti hunters - they dont have to look far to find some unthinkable act by a hunter broadcast on global TV stations. And we sit scratching our heads in wonder why hunting is under such huge media attack. Having been in the hunting conservation industry for over 35 years and knowing a bunch of the so called personalities , I only shake my head and bite my tongue when some newbee tells me about meeting these dudes and getting enthralled by them, we are and remain our worst own enemies. So long as pictures of people disrespecting trophies or behaving like hill billies after a kill are captured on smartphones/ TV and sent viral , guess what ? don't expect to convince the vast majority of people hunting is a family / conservation sport outdoor adventure.
Not saying don't celebrate or let the anti's dictate our sport , but the fact that a thread like this exists warns us there is something wrong.

Yeah, but the real problem isn't "people disrespecting trophies", it's people respecting trophies - because any reference to an animal as a "trophy" makes virtually the entire global community cringe ... and since Gayne is asking for "cringe worthy expressions", I just thought I'd point that out.

Jack O'Connor was far too great of influence on me. It disturbed him greatly when someone called a mule deer a "muley"---as do I. I can't recall his exact text, but it was something like, "you don't call a whitetail deer a 'whitey' or a bull moose a 'moosey'".
Far too many people on TV call the majestic MULE DEER a "muley".

Yep, I call an acorn an "akern". Been known to call accuracy, "akersy", focus my hunting on a single white tail buck as the "trophy" I was interested in that year (possibly even giving him a name like 'old moss back', etc.), been known to give thanks for time afield (successful or not in the hunt), and quite a few other things the easily offended here would get a wad in their panties over.

Yep, some shows are better than others. But that goes for every genre, not just hunting shows. Personally, I'd rather watch ANY HUNTING SHOW than something sponsored by the anti-hunting crowd ... which is all to common these days ala NatGeoWild, etc. Bringing in the wives and kids ... an attempt to expand the base and increase hunters numbers; but that's objectionable here.

Just more hunters against hunters for the sole reason of them being different than you.

The only thing i dislike about hunting shows is advertising of their sponsors during the show itself, sometimes even as soon as the animal is down, i have no problem in they making a segment for advertising I know it is a business, but it does look a bit ridiculous that they do it during the actual hunt itself, sometimes while an animal is still trashing.

Jorge, I'm with you on Pigman. He reminds me of Cartman, off Southpark...and makes me laugh. I watch him and Tim Wells, for pure entertainment....and don't watch much of the rest. Never understood "tough hunting" while sitting in a tree stand, over a pile of corn? Or the "pheasant hunters" that flush nothing but roosters, all in .410 range, in December....and then try to pass it off like they are wild birds.

Then the ones that thank "Jesus and baby Jesus", or taking a knee and praying next to the animal, or act like they are having a nervous breakdown, after the shot.

Then there's one gal that kinda sounds like a porn queen, after the shot.....but I kinda like that.

Larry Potterfield is not a host. He is a business owner and he does commercials for his business. This is obvious, I know, but he pays for his airtime, he is not a host shamelessly plugging his sponsors at every opportunity. When my wife and I lost our home in a fire 5 years ago, Midway USA was very helpful in getting us a list of items we purchased from them so we could file an accurate claim with our insurance carrier. I spoke to Larry the next year at a convention. I tried to thank him for all the help we had been given, but his only concern was whether we were going to be alright, and able to recover emotionally and materially from the incident. It was nice to find someone who still remembered what it was like before he became wealthy. Hell yes, I still do as much business with him as I can, and all the other businesses that helped us out as well. BTW, I can't stand post-kill closeup celebrations of hunters doing everything they can to fall out of a treestand. Turning the sound down helps, as does the bourbon!

Larry Potterfield is a gentleman and a great individual. I met him at DSC one year in the food stand area. He was alone, eating a hot dog. I quipped "hey Larry how are you enjoying my children's inheritance" he laughed and asked me to join him. We had a great conversation about guns, Africa etc. Every year after that, he always says hello, especially at the dinners. Very nice man indeed.

I find Pigman humorous while hunting pigs. When he goes after other things , I find him revolting . For example , his lion "hunt." Either he is unbelievably stupid or he think his audience is.

The worst offenders are typically rednecks with scruffy beards and drawls that sound like they have a mouth full of marbles. Typical expressions:

1) "You on eem Billy Bob??" They all pronounce "him" as "eem"
2) "I smoked eem Ricky Bobby!"
3) Last but not least "I tell you what". All time worst episode was a loser named Heath Painter who used to have his own show. He shot a real nice caribou in one episode, and by actual count said "I tell you what" NINE times between pulling the trigger and reaching the downed caribou. Thank heavens his show only lasted one season.

Back when I still was going to Africa, by some strange stroke of coincidence I wound up on the same planes as Larry and his family multiple times. I found all of them to be truly nice people anyone would be proud to know.

There are multiple hosts who don't have good grammer. Like saying "I seen" when it should have been "I saw."

By the way, the ONLY time I've ever heard the seeds of oaks called "akerns" has been on TV and I've lived north, south, east and west. I guess the shows cater to the 4 or 5 people in the United States that say it that way.

I think there is a perception that if one sounds like a hick, one must be out hunting to eat for every meal and somehow has a closer bond to nature and hunting.

Heading out on a road trip and we are suspending our cable TV for 6 months. Never paid attention to how much we were paying till I suspended it.

Just might not restart it when we return.

Of course Joyce might go into HGTV withdraw, which is probably a good thing.

I hated hearing Waddell, when speaking of some hunting gadget, say "This is the mackdaddy of _____________ (fill in which gadget) that I will never buy any product with his name or "Bone Collector" on it.

Hearing someone, after killing something, say "That's what I'm talking 'bout".

I also hate to hear hosts talk about this being my very first elk or whatever else. You're the flipping host of a hunting show. you should have earned your spurs before getting the show. you ought to be an expert and not just some yokel going on their first hunt.
