Trophies fron Zim - Prepaid Freight?

I just received word that my trophies are ready for shipment. The shipping company said that I'll get a better rate if the shipping is prepaid.

My concern is that I prepay the shipping and given the situation in Zim never receive my trophies. I have 18 animals coming back including a full giraffe skin, so I'm assuming that the shipping costs are going to be in the thousands. Is prepayment of the shipment a good idea or should I hold off?

Hi Pete, Are you using a Customs Broker? I use Fauna & Flora to import my trophies, and they are sent COD to NY. The price we pay is the same as we are quoted from the exporter. Having dealt with multiple exporters, F&F and the exporters have a comfortable agreement and there has been no problems. I would definately use a Customs Broker here and speak with them about your situation. I agree; I would be concerned about pre-payment. Keep us posted. LDK

talentrec,

I've never pre paid a trophy shipment and Idon't recommend it. If your using a well established taxidermist he should be able to guarantee payment and have the shipment come COD. Have your taxidermist get in touch with the shipper in Zim and make a plan.

Pete, that's sounds like a load of bull to me. If this were a shipment of only PG trophies it would be one thing, but this shipment has your LEOPARD in it, which involves CITES paperwork. Don't mess around with those hacks. Get an importer/customs agent involved ASAP.

I agree to get an import agent involved however I disagree and say prepay the frieght if you are dealing with a reputable company over there. Every logistics service company I have ever dealt with or any friends have dealt with that cleared a shipment that arrived frieght collect marked that up on thier invoice at least 100%. I have prepaid frieght on four seperate shipments from Zim and have yet to get the short end of the stick. For an import agent try ABX Logistics. (281)-449-0892

Pete,

I always prepay and I use a taxidermist who can do the customs clearing which saves some money. There is nothing wrong with using a broker, but they do add on a lot of charges for their services.

Make sure you have a CITES permit for the leopard, fax the shipper a copy and or your clearing house.

I've had customers do it both ways for years and it will work which ever way you choose. I would agree you need a customs broker over here to handle the clearance of your trophies when they arrive.

I have also heard this. I belive it is a precaution against being charged extra by the clearing agent in the US. They add on a few $$ to the freight cost!

I was charged $50 on top of the freight cost on top of the their clearing costs. Their resaon was that they had to incur a cost to wire the money back to Zim!

Thanks for all the feedback. I am using Fauna and Flora to clear the shipment. I was under the assumption that I would be paying them directly, so hearing from the freight company in Zim that they want things prepaid came as somewhat of a surprise to me. It made me wonder if they forgot I was using F&F. Does Freight Consultants in Bulwayo ring a bell to anyone?

It will be interesting to see if there's a difference in what I'm quoted for shipping cost...

I have pre-paid freight on trophies from Zimbabwe. But it was a company from Bulawayo called Maple Freight conjoined with another company called Worldwide Logistics. They came just as I was told with no problems. The receiving agent in Dallas that a lot of folks use received them for me. Can't think of that fellows name right now but Jerry Huffaker probably knows him. Anyway all went just fine.

I got a quote from a shipping company RSA to Edmonton(cheaper by air) that was referred to me by RedDune taxidermy and they said it had to be prepaid.

Talentrec;

Prepaying the freight is not usually a big deal if you are paying it to the freight company and receiving an airbill.

I noticed you are in MN. So one thing to check on is if you are having the shipment booked into JFK but are paying airfreight to St. Paul you may have a problem with the shipment being terminated in NY and having to pay customs clearing etc there and then pay additional freight to get it to MN.

I received a notice this past week that indicated JFK was enforcing an APHIDS or USDA reg in that fashion at that port. It has since been posted on this site:

see; raw freight to jfk

I have found that with international freight you don't usually have to pay anymore to ship from say Johannesburg to San Francisco than you do to NY or Atlanta etc. So picking a friendly port close to either the tannery or your home is a money and time saving consideration.

I would definately use a broker. Most of the larger ones will do a good job, I use Maria Europa @ Hunter International for the top shelf personal service and money saving advice. (Maria Felix [meuropa@sbcglobal.net])
