Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have quite a large number of dorcas gazells, and were able to swap a few for the sheep you see above.

We are not really sure what sheep they are, so anyone with any knowledge of these please tel us their correct name.

There are LOTS of sheep breeds out there. Do you know if these are hair sheep or merino wool sheep?

Looks like Karakul...

They look to me to be bedouin sheep that I saw being herded in Saudi Arabia. Don't know if it is any certain breed, they were just called "Bedouin Sheep"

My guesses, judging by the coats, are Arapawa, Hazaragi, or Navajo-Churra.

Are they a fat-tailed sheep?

I think that shearing is the least of their concerns about what Walter could do to them!

I would say Soay sheep.

Walter has already ear-marked one for a BBQ! I have told him he can have one if he caught it himself. But he has to wait a few days before he can do that, so they can settle in.

What he does not know is we are also getting some gemsbok. Once the gemsbok are here, we will put them together, then tell Walter to go in and get his BBQ sheep.

I will also mention that he should be careful, as the gemsbok bull is rather nasty, and likes to chase people around. I will then sit back and watch as Walter gets his brains into gear, trying to find a way to get at the sheep without getting horned by the gemsbok!

No doubt them be watthefugrthey sheep.

I hunted them in Texas once.

If you really want to be nasty add a black wildebeest bull, they have be known and used by farmers to look over the sheep and chase and kill jackal and even people who wanted to steal stock.

If Saeed does video Walter trying to catch a sheep, there will be a longer line for a copy than there is for their safari videos!

They sure ain't Merino or Arapawa. I have one of each, and both have quite similar horns that are quite unlike the bigger ram in Saeed's photo. See below. -TONY

If the guys from New Zealand don't know, certainly one of the boys from Wyoming or Montana will...

Saeed, do you have a pic of a mature ram, one that is 6+ years? Front and broadside view would help. Also, live weight? They appear to be out of Mouflon stock, but do resemble Soay. Once they shed it will be easier to tell.

I am from Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska, and your a bastard for suggesting I would know what breed they are.

Unfortunatly for me, you are right they are Soays, it all depends on their tails.

If they have fat tails like Boer or Persian type sheep thent hey are probably some kind of Karakul or Mid-East type sheep.

If they have a short tail they are some kind of Soay or similar European breed.

Oh and Soays only way about 70 pounds for the ram, so if they are big, then probably something else.

Another small British breed is the Welsh black.

They are similar looking.

I'll vote for Curry Sheep.....a species from India that is best served in a very spicy sauce over basmati rice.

Just to be the smart ass of the group, they are one of the semi domestic variants of the Mouflon.

Mouflons were the original parent stock of ALL the various breeds, NOT SPECIES, of hair sheep.

Yes, even though that animal has wool technically it is not considered a wool breed, because it can and will shed on its own, just like a Mouflon.

All of the various semi domestic mutations, i.e., Navajo-Churro, Barbado, Black-Belly Barbado, Texas dall, Golden Dall, Black Hawiian, Corsican, Painted Desect, Jacobs, Soay, etc., and ALL of the domestic breeds originated from Mouflons.

Many researchers believe that the Mouflons that were native to the island of Cyprus, were the first of the Mouflon group that were domesticated.

Walter went to inspect them yesterday, and says they have no fat tails.

He said "No fat tails, but plenty of fat for the lamb chops, which Hessa likes, and roast leg for Uncle Walter! When can I shoot one?"

Me "Bloody hell Walter, they are so tame you catch them by hand, why would you want to shoot one?"

Walter "It is more fun shooting one and then cooking it. It reminds me of hunting"

Me "Yep, that is the only hunting you really enjoy ha? Right next to your cooking pit?"

Walter "It is. You and your friend Roy are crazy. Chasing wild animals all day long! I much prefer or hunt in South Africa. Louis gave me a sand bag, to use on top of the truck, as I am sitting comfortably on a chair. That was the best hunt I have ever had. When are we going there again?"

Me "Trust you to call that hunting! It is just shooting for the pot as far as I am concerned!"

Walter "Then how come I saw you coming back looking like you are one step from the grave ha? Explain that to me!"

Me "I had bad tick fever then, and felt like almost dying anyway"

Walter "Just proves how crazy you are. Almost dying, but not dying enough to stop hunting. You had to go chase some poor animal and kill it"

Me "One cannot waste a day in Africa by not hunting!"

Walter "Ha ha ha! You see. It IS hunting, you said it yourself! I love hunting in South Africa. Those guys know what comfortable hunting should be. Whe are we going there again?"
