Ask all the people who've been mauled or killed by the "gentle" elephant that allow humans to get "fabulously close" for on foot encounters. I know when I've been "fabulously close" to elephant, I have the .458 Lott at the ready.

Excellent read. Often heard the same about elephants. They have good days, and bad days. If you happen to be around on a bad day, you get leaned on, stepped on, or otherwise squashed, as a minor annoyance.
Funny, but a friend had a 1000 pound cow that was a real pain. Broke through the fence, tried to run him down, and butt him. To get him back in the pen required barricades and a truck. And, it only weighed 1000 pounds, not 8-12 thousand.
