Poaching in Tanzania (Photos)

During a recent safari in Tanzania we came across a suspected poacher while we were hunting buffalo. We cautiously approached the subject and detained him. After further discussion, he revealed several items in his pack that most would agree are rather problematic.

While we often read about poachers I thought some of you might appreciate seeing the items that we seized. We transported the suspected poacher to the authorities without incident.

Later during the same hunt we came upon the tracks of three additional people that were likely involved in commercial poaching activity. We located their camp and found their fires still warm. We provided the GPS coordinates to the authorities.

Whenever I come across the remains of a commercial poacher’s work it is a very sad moment for me. I am proud to say that as hunters we stand united against commercial poachers and their direct attack against our values as hunters and conservationists.

Sad to read about this.

While a lot of this article is against hunting, it covers a very interesting aspect of the commercial poaching element - the Asian connection:

Interesting link A7Dave, I too found the commercial poaching component interesting. I do not recall ever before reading about Al-Shabaab, the Islamist youth militia, poaching elephants.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

One of the saddest and most disgusting things we have ever seen in the bush was poacher's work just outside the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania.

It was the dessicated carcass of a magnificent, 6-8 year old, full maned lion lying dead in a heavy, steel cable snare.

Of course, we also saw Tanzanian game scouts with poached hartebeest and buffalo in the same area. Foxes guarding the hen house.

Unfortunately this seems to be a common theme in Africa.
