He's catching them, common habit shooters develop, mostly for reloading purposes. Not particularly hard to do, it's the target breaking that is tough. | |||

With the smoke/gas coming out of the barrels, they must have just been fired. That would indicate that he is catching the empties as they are ejected. | |||
