Just going through old pics and it occurred to me elephants are BIG

As the "Madam" would say, "That's a big ass Elephant."

This guy walked up to us when we were stalking a group of cows in the Caprivi. He stood 10 feet from us for several minutes, just staring at us. It was awesome!

Great shot biebs...The PROS say that Botswana bulls are the biggest but after been in Bots, Nam and Zim-Hwange/GonaRZ I can say they get VERY BIG in all these areas.

We saw a lot of Elephants in the Kafue and there was one huge bodied Bull (small Ivory) that made the rest look small. I couldn't believe how big it was.

What does an average elephant weigh body size wise? Height at the shoulder?

Congrats on a great ele.

I have read the Bull that is mounted in the Smithsonian Institute likely had a live weight approaching 24,000 lbs. I believe it was shot in Angola. They mentioned there were one or two bulls killed likely larger.

I sense a developing theme, here.....

Way back in college in the mid sixties, I had an English prof who went on a rant when a student used the word big to descibe something in a paper. It went something like nobody really knows what big is. When I met my first bull elephant in the brush, the first thing through my mind was, 'Dr. Shiffman, that is the definition of big'.

Actual picture.

Looks like Fenikovi and Mario were really lousy shots, missing the vitals (or maybe the whole elephant) time after time.

Someplace I heard that the tusks were about 100 pounds.

Also, when I was in Dande North last year, I was told that some of their big elephants can get 13 feet high. The one I shot was big--much bigger in the body than the one I shot in 2008, but we had no way of measuring the height.

What I would like to know: How does a Hungarian engineer move to Spain and build a career that lets him take off three months a year and how does he come to own a huge ranch in Africa?

Do you get TUSKLESS male African elephants?

The male India elephant without tusks is called a Makhna. They get much bigger - 11 feet tall versus an big tusker of 10 feet & females of 9 feet. The trunk is massive and very thick at the base and they tend to be much more agressive - I suppose that is how they get to be a dominant bull in a herd and are able to compete with tuskers.

There are tuskless bulls, but not very often.

As Todd said, tuskless bulls are much more rare than tuskless cows. But they are out there. I shot one three years ago at Chete.
