I was wondering if anybody knew all the species of plains game that are huntable in Africa? What might be the most difficult species to hunt, due to either cunning or rarity? I look forward to your responses.

If you use S.C.I. Animals of Africa and eliminate the Big 5, about 159. As far as rarity, my opinion is the Mountain Nyala due to only one place in the world where he can be hunted, Ethiopia. Limited permits and very expensive. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

i think some of the tougher ones to hunt are actually the little guys , - bates pygmy antelope royal antelope , suni etc etc to name a few - they are not common , live in incredibly dense forrest and are shy and very fast - "The greatest threat to our wildlife is the thought that someone else will save it” www.facebook.com/ivancartersafrica www.ivancarterwca.org www.ivancarter.com ivan@ivancarter.com

A great part of the difficulty in collecting a diverse selection of African animals is that so many of them occur in only one country and/or area. I have taken over 50 different species but have been sitting on 28 of the SCI "African 29" for at least five years. The few animals that qualify for the last one needed to complete my quest are not necessarily rare, but they are located in areas I have not returned to in recent years. And I won't complete it next year when I return to Zim on another Ele hunt. I certainly agree with Ivan as to the little guys being tough (and fun). I will hopefully add my eighth and ninth to my "Tiny Ten" with Chifuti Safaris next year. The list I posted was from SCI's Animals of Africa Inner Circle. They don't list zebra, giraffe, or baboon. Sounds like SCI needs a few more SLAMs.

Another vote with Ivan, and some of the smaller antelopes are being closed or very limited in area; Yellow backed Duiker, etc. Gray Ghost Hunting Safaris http://grayghostsafaris.com Phone: 615-860-4333 Email: hunts@grayghostsafaris.com NRA Benefactor DSC Professional Member SCI Member RMEF Life Member NWTF Guardian Life Sponsor NAHC Life Member Rowland Ward - SCI Scorer Took the wife the Eastern Cape for her first hunt: http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6881000262 Hunting in the Stormberg, Winterberg and Hankey Mountains of the Eastern Cape 2018 http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4801073142 Hunting the Eastern Cape, RSA May 22nd - June 15th 2007 http://forums.accuratereloadin...=810104007#810104007 16 Days in Zimbabwe: Leopard, plains game, fowl and more: http://forums.accuratereloadin...=212108409#212108409 Natal: Rhino, Croc, Nyala, Bushbuck and more http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6341092311 Recent hunt in the Eastern Cape, August 2010: Pics added http://forums.accuratereloadin...261039941#9261039941 10 days in the Stormberg Mountains http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7781081322 Back in the Stormberg Mountains with friends: May-June 2017 http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6001078232 "Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. There are a lot fewer SPECIES of African game than animal categories in the SCI record book. That's because SCI has created separate categories for a bunch of subspecies and/or color phases. For example, there are only two species of wildebeest, one species of roan, two species of waterbuck, one species of bushbuck, one species of sable, one (maybe two) species of African buffalo, one species of springbok, etc., etc.. Before anyone slams SCI, let me say that its Trophy Records Committee created the majority of those categories at the request of outfitters and members. The various southern kudu categories, for example, came about at the request of outfitters in areas where kudus typically had smaller horns. During the sixteen years I edited the record books, there were many such requests, as well as requests to create categories that had absolutely no biological basis. Most were rejected, but some did get approved, witness the color phases of springbok and blesbock created by game farmers through selective breeding. Bill Quimby

vandy, Honey badgers are more of a varmint than a plains game animal. Likewise, Spring Hare, Porcupine, Jackel etc. Still a good point and a tough species to add to any hunters wish list. And a good job Bill. Aside from record keeping, it's good to understand a little more about the game we seek before we head off to some far off continent. Thanks for the very enlightening list. I am actually surprised that the total number is a bit limited. The Ethiopian wolf & Walia ibex are protected & distinct species. I have always been amazed with the diversity of animals in India & I wish I had lived 50 or 100 years ago & been able to hunt them. Here are some of them....just from my memory....
