How many species of huntable plains game?

I was wondering if anybody knew all the species of plains game that are huntable in Africa?

What might be the most difficult species to hunt, due to either cunning or rarity?

I look forward to your responses.

If you use S.C.I. Animals of Africa and eliminate the Big 5, about 159.

As far as rarity, my opinion is the Mountain Nyala due to only one place in the world where he can be hunted, Ethiopia. Limited permits and very expensive.

i think some of the tougher ones to hunt are actually the little guys , - bates pygmy antelope royal antelope , suni etc etc to name a few -

they are not common , live in incredibly dense forrest and are shy and very fast -

A great part of the difficulty in collecting a diverse selection of African animals is that so many of them occur in only one country and/or area.

I have taken over 50 different species but have been sitting on 28 of the SCI "African 29" for at least five years. The few animals that qualify for the last one needed to complete my quest are not necessarily rare, but they are located in areas I have not returned to in recent years. And I won't complete it next year when I return to Zim on another Ele hunt.

I certainly agree with Ivan as to the little guys being tough (and fun). I will hopefully add my eighth and ninth to my "Tiny Ten" with Chifuti Safaris next year.

The list I posted was from SCI's Animals of Africa Inner Circle. They don't list zebra, giraffe, or baboon. Sounds like SCI needs a few more SLAMs. Big Grin

There are a lot fewer SPECIES of African game than animal categories in the SCI record book.

That's because SCI has created separate categories for a bunch of subspecies and/or color phases.

For example, there are only two species of wildebeest, one species of roan, two species of waterbuck, one species of bushbuck, one species of sable, one (maybe two) species of African buffalo, one species of springbok, etc., etc..

Before anyone slams SCI, let me say that its Trophy Records Committee created the majority of those categories at the request of outfitters and members.

The various southern kudu categories, for example, came about at the request of outfitters in areas where kudus typically had smaller horns.

During the sixteen years I edited the record books, there were many such requests, as well as requests to create categories that had absolutely no biological basis.

Most were rejected, but some did get approved, witness the color phases of springbok and blesbock created by game farmers through selective breeding.

vandy, Honey badgers are more of a varmint than a plains game animal. Likewise, Spring Hare, Porcupine, Jackel etc. Still a good point and a tough species to add to any hunters wish list.

And a good job Bill. Aside from record keeping, it's good to understand a little more about the game we seek before we head off to some far off continent. Thanks for doing what you did, David
