I had one eye done last week and the other this week, been convelesing, if you can call it that, means doing nothing, mommas feeding the horses and complaining loudly but life ain't perfect...

I can see my iron sights and target like I have never seen them in years, I now have 20/20 in both eyes..Funny thing is it never hurt my shooting for some strange reason..

If any of you have cataracts then do yourself a favor, get'em done, totally painless and it works... beer

I don't have cataracts, but my left eye was always my best one. I was sitting at my desk a few years ago in Mumbai, blinked and it was like an eyelash got in my eye. Well three years later it's still there; looks like a windshield wiper effect when I blink, at least from where I'm sitting. I've been to two specialists. One said it's just part of growing old. The other one said he could see the moving particle, but there was no way of doing anything with it. It's a nuisance. It pisses me off. It ruins my putting. Luckily when I look through a scope that left eye is closed.

My Doc says I will have to have that by December, so glad to read your report. Your experience is exactly what he promises me....he does say I will have to lay off shooting anything bigger than 22LR for a while after surgery, and big stuff for a month to six weeks...and then only after he checks progress and OK's practice.

Happy for you that all is well, glad you took the time to report as it gives me hope.

Glad to have you recovering well. My momma had that done not too long ago. She wanted to take the day off but I told her I needed some money for more ammo, and her Social Security check wasn't going to cover it.

So I dropped her off at WalMart at 5 a.m. as usual.

Cowboy up.

Will - You really are a bad boy. I like your humor though, being from Kansas originally as well.

Good luck on a speedy recovery Ray!!

To fix a cataract these days, the surgeon cuts open the eyeball, removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a polymer lens.

Polymer replacement lenses can be made corrective so as to improve vision.

Good news, Ray. Take it easy for awhile since doing other work might affect the healing process. (That would be my story and I'd stick to it! Wink )

I wish now that I would have had my doc put a cross hair in the right lens, its about 10X and has a wide field of view and is instantly adjustable, would have saved a bundle on scopes in the future!..I promised the good doctor a week and I'm roping on Thurs. and will be shooting in a month...

Ray,

I'm glad you're doing well and now have great eyesight.

I'm a candidate to have surgery, someday. How bad was your eyesight before you decided to have the surgery? My worst eye is about 20/60 with correction. But I'm having problems with depth perception and, of course, iron sight.

Thanks,

Larry

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Discovered i had cataracts six months before my 2004 Safari (first ever) and went into a panic. Went and had the lens replacement operation done, which is painless and yields absolutely instant gratification. Made it to Africa four months later, enjoying excellent eyesight. Went back again in 2007, still in great shape. If you need the lens replacement procedure, Go For It!!!!

I've got one slowly growing on my right (shooters) eye. So far its progress has not required me to go in for the surgery. The doc says that I am young for having one, but attributes it in part to heredity and to being outside in the sun and exposed to the elements a lot over the years.
