Yank Allen was the greatest lion hunter Africa has ever seen. He was a cowboy from Texas who wore riding boots and a colt revover on all public appearances. Look up Brian Marshes articles on the web (or Magnum magazine). Had another fellow come out here in the 50s to capture animals for zoos and particularly crocs for crocodile wrestling matches. See the book Crocodile trader.

Once upon a time, when I was a young lad read a book titled "Bring them back alive" wrote by a certain Frank Buck if I remember well. There the a group of cowboys lassoed African animals for zoos.
That chap was severely questioned I understand.
