By all accounts a huge pride male has been taken in my community by government game scouts.

I had applied to the wildlife department for this problematic male to be sold to a hunter and the entire proceeds to go to the community and for compensation to the livestock owners.

The community are now looking to destroy the rest of the pride.

My mind fucking boggles.

I simply cannot wrap my head around this form of "thinking".

It's Africa, what do you expect? Logic? Reason? Hell no!

Not sure how to educate and recalibrate that type of thinking.

Kind of compares to the story of the African store owner whose store was full of non-essential items that no one wanted. Where is your sugar, flour, batteries etc., he was asked? He replies, I quit obtaining those because I could not keep them on my shelves, look now how my shelves are full of items.

Can you please post any news link to the whole issue including the plan to destroy the whole pride.

We need need to post that on the Lionaid site and ask if that is the solution!

I have a couple of family members who are very keen on wildlife. One was a former hunter. Now both have become totally anti hunting.

One of them lives in Botswana and I asked him if it was better to hunt non breeding males of kill off the entire pride including cubs with poisoned cattle carcasses killed by lions? No reply to the challenge.

When I first read this, I thought that the gov. (Game scouts) were up to no good. Then I reread it.

I suppose they were the ones who wanted the scouts to kill the pride male?

I don't envy you Andrew, trying to explain to the community what has been lost here.

I'm not sure they could comprehend the tragedy.

This reminds me of the recent Namibian Black Rhino caper/sale. The amount of money that could been generated for conservation here, in both cases, is mind blowing. They are their own worst enemies.

Truly and outrageously stupid of them to do such a thing. But then again, these are the same idiots who banned lion hunting. Makes one lose all hope.

Wait! Is that Lion Aid to the rescue with all of their 40K in tow to protect them??

There is now some confusion about the shooting of the Lion and ZAWA are adamant that they did not. Apologies to them if this is the case and I might have been a bit hasty in my reaction to what maybe a rumour.

Maybe they can sort things out for the better. One can only hope.
