It's Friday night a beautifal spring evening...I got...

1. Vension medallions and hog ribs on the grill
2. A Johnnie Walker Blue straight up in my hand
3. A cuban lit up in the other
4. 1997 George LaTour cabernet de-canting
5. My yellow lab Heidi next to me...

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

You know what's funny...I have almost the same setup, just different components. Although I'm sure an Austin, TX Spring evening isn't nearly as nice as your CA Spring evening, but I digress...

1. Ribeyes on the grill
2. A nice '99 (Paradigm is the maker, incredible) Cabernet in my glass
3. A freshly cut Opus X waiting for me after dinner (I hope I don't have to explain what an Opus X is)
4. Good friends here to enjoy all of it with me

Cheers Mike!! Big Grin Great post!

Sounds great.....but think about this.....
I have Salmon filets on the grill and my yellow labrador sitting here. My .404 is perched on the mantle above me and my Kudu mount is watching me from the corner of the room.
I'm delighted to say that after being a three pack a day man I haven't smoked anything for 15 years and I haven't had a drink for almost four years.

By all means....enjoy that Cuban and the scotch.....I'm envious.....but very happy that it's yours!!!

Yup, life can be good.

Tomorrow is my birthday. In the afternoon I'll load the Cobra (a 425 hp replica of the 1965 AC Ace stuffed with a big V8 by Carrol Shelby) with two double rifles and get in some good seat time to and from the range.

Dinner will venison backstrap sections wrapped in bacon and cooked on the BBW after a swig of 30 year old Glenfiddich bought in the Joberg duty free shop. We'll finish with a little 1937 Spanish port acquired from a rebottler in Paris some years ago. (Always reminds me of Hemingway and the Spanish Civil War.)

Had hoped the trophies from last May's Africa trip, but they'll eventually get here. Will certainly remember the colors changing as the sun rose in the Limpopo.

Nice to have had a good job, even though it didn't last as long as I might have liked.

Cheers and good memories to all!

Red wine in moderation is good for your health. You are doing your body a disservice by not having a glass or two each day.

Mike

Sounds like you have a wonderful scenario. Just add a pretty blonde to your setup.

"George Latour" - is this a Californian wine?

Lets see, gave a speech at the ABA Healthcare Fraud conference in Palm Springs this morning, played golf at the Golf Resort at Indian Wells, just finished a fabulous dinner at an Italian restaraunt with a couple of grey goose martinis, a few bottles of Caymus, finished off with some Taylor Fladgate vintage port and a Cohiba (thanks Rusty!). Now how shall I fill my day in the desert tomorrow?

Life is Grand! Too cold and rainy for BBQ last night so my Lady and I went out for Mexican and a pitcher of Margaritas from a great Mexican place. Followed by a sashay through the Mall and quality time together.

Came home to a miffed Lab who was bribed with a pig's ear. Played Monopoly (Dog version)and drank Jack & Coke till bedtime.

Now I'm up wondering who won at Monopoly and where'd the new tent come from? Confused

The past couple nites we've had some lovely, cool evenings here in the high desert (at 4200ft)... I enjoy sitting outdoors beside an old woodstove in the cool evenings with a hot cup of coffee and smoking one of my favorite old pipes. Living in a rural area on a high ridge, we've got a spectacular view for about 30 miles all to the south and southwest right off my front portch. One of my favorite ways to relax...

Now when it comes to BBQ'ing it's the same scenario, just add cold beer and sizzling steaks! And yes, life is good - I am thankful for every new day...

Lois and I went over to some friends for a grilled elk backstrap, green beans and some Idaho spuds.

We followed our pointers home along the irrigation canal system; they got to point some pheasant and ducks. Later we watched the sun set.

This was all possible because we sent our pet rain cloud over to Ray's place to knock down the dust in his corral.

My little girl is 2 years and 8 months old, and every evening, she likes to sit on my lap and play some of the childrens games they have online at fisherprice.com

Yesterday, as she jumped on my lap, I was doing an edit of our hunting video of last year. She saw Walter on the video, and pointing at him said "Walter!"

As the video camera moved off Walter, Ray became visible, so I told her that was uncle Ray! She repeated "uncle Ray".

Next came the usual question, as she saw me resting the rifle to sight it in; "what are you doing papa?"

I said I was hunting.

Next came the statement that floored me "I want to go huting too!"

I cannot wait to take her on her first hunting safari!

Yesterday afternoon I rode my Harley down to Orange Park, FL to meet Jorge and his pretty wife at a Cuban place for supper. I know absolutely nothing about Cuban food, but Jorge ordered me some type of beef that is sliced thin and cooked "crunchy". Dang it was good. You dipped it in a garlic sauce (which I can still taste this morning.)

The weather was CAVU, the traffic light (I took some back roads by the Satilla and St. Marys Rivers and avoided the Interstate, temp was low 70's...

Saeed: Has it been 2 years and 8 months since you had your daughter? How times flies...The account of your daughter and her wanting to hunt (like her father) is sweet. You are a good man Saeed.

Sad to say that this particular piece of research has been thrown into doubt. The drinking of red wine in moderation is a habit fairly particular to a certain socio-economic class with other more beneficial life style habits that have a much greater influence....

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Confused

I find that if I "plan" to enjoy good wine, I pick my foods more carefully to "go" with the wine. I eat more fish, less fried food and less processed crap.

If I'm going to spend the money on wine, it ain't going to be with microwaved cardboard.

15 days to Lynn Lake, Manitoba and bear hunting and fly-fishing for pike! And maybe some pink Ripple with the walleyes, too.

But what I really enjoy is getting up before the rest of the guys (and a couple of women hunters this year!) and fixing breakfast for everybody. Pancakes, spicy link sausage, orange juice, real coffee, maple syrup, real butter and a couple of eggs over easy. A good gut filler for a morning of fish catching..

OK, Judge, you can cook the breakfast, but ya gotta use my pancake batter and not that BisQuick crap! Roll Eyes

I'll be paddling around fishing, or my twin brother Dan and I might go scouting the lake edge for a spot-and-stalk opportunity while you are slaving in the kitchen. Ring that dinner bell loud when the cakes are ready! thumb

Huh???

What evidence has "thrown into doubt" recent proven scientific studies???

Scientific studies in Australia (and elsewhere) only in the last 8 years have shown red wine in moderation is good for the health. The main factor being particular anti-oxidants from red wine being active in the breakdown of fatty tissue and deposits in the blood and arteries.

The old claim from the 1960's and 70's that wine was good for the health was based on a lifestyle assumption mainly based on wine as a relaxant and the resultant decrease in stress and stress related diseases. Probably still true too.

By the way ....

for beer drinkers, it has been proven with similar studies that beer also has similar beneficial affects but on a somewhat lesser scale.

Many mature cultures consider wine and beer as a food, not a drug, and even children as young as 3 or 4 have a sip. Also pyschologically making alcohol less taboo and a source of later "rebel" activity and abuse.

Enjoy a glass of red tonight - and feel good about it! beer

(PS got to find an icon of red wine glasses clinking!)

Spent the weekend ripping old flooring out of the house my fiance and I bought. 40 year old linoleum does NOT come up without a fight!! I'm sore as a bitch today!!!

However, the property is on a beautiful lot in the country and I know when all the renovations are done, I'll be doing my share of relaxing around the "braai", smoking a Romeo and Juliette and swilling cognac. Prefer it to scotch. Scotch gives me a headache.
