Let's share some pictures and stories about nyala. Below is a previous post about my nyala taken in 2004.

The next morning Mark and I decided to go back down by the river and try our luck there again. We were making a stalk on a red duiker when the wind changed and gave us away. Mark had a good feeling about turning around and walking down the river bed. Although, this made much more noise because of the rocks, when rounding a bend in the river you could see about 100 yards down the river channel. We were making our way down the river when we came around a bend and there was a young nyala bull coming down the river toward us. We froze and the bull walked to within 20 yards of us and couldn't have cared if we were there or not. At one point he looked us dead straight in the eye and never thought twice. Then Mark said there is another young bull coming. The second was following the same path and then Mark said, "Good bull, get down." Well, this was when things got interesting. Mark was able to get all the way down but the second bull put his radar lock on us as I was about half way down at about 15 yards. I froze and the Mexican stand off began not even wanting to see the large bull bringing up the rear. After about 2 minutes of eye to eye contact, the second bull ran up the river embankment following the first one. Once he got to the top, he let out a bark, which caused the large bull to stop dead in his tracks. The larger bull then barked and the second quickly followed with another bark. A few minutes later the large bull barked a second time. Mark then whispered to me, "Take the shot now or he is going to leave." Well, this was easier said then done because I couldn't see anything but the right horn and his right ear. Mark could see him perfectly but where I was crouched I couldn't see much. After another couple minutes the large bull made his final mistake by trying to follow the other two bulls. He made about 4 steps into a quarting towards me shooting lane about 30 yards away. I didn't even wait for him to stop, once he entered the lane and I pulled the trigger. I hit the animal in the left front shoulder exiting towards the last couple of ribs on the other side. He ran to the top of embankment about 15 yards and piled up.

The nyala measured just under 25", which was smaller then ones I had passed on earlier in the week; however, in my own mind I shouldn't have even came home with this guy.

Every Nyala is a good Nyala. This one is 28", and I passed on another one that would have gone 31" the day before I left last August. That drove the PHs' crazy, but I already had a great representative one.

My nyala to date, both from Zululand. This was the first one:

The horns were stolen somewhere between the taxidermist and crating so I have nothing but the photo.

My second is the best, he has the classic bell shape and quite good mass. His neck was all swelled up and he was full of "character" from recent battles.

Both were taken with a .375H&H. If I ever hunt another one it will be with the bow.

This was a large herd of nyala I spotted in a picturesque valley in Hluehluwe.

Another park bull, nyala are poetry in motion!

This is a nice one from Garry Kelley's Bonwa Phala where there are many nyala. I might of had a picture of much bigger one this last year from Mkuze but I shot right over his back.

This is one of MY "Top Five" animals of all time with a bow. Taken at Melorani Safaris, RSA in 2004. Fourteen day hunt and this guy was taken on day 12 at 26 yards, ran 35 yards and was down and out. I have the shot on video and go back and relive the scence quite often.

Vivo RSA 2006 Browning .300 WSM

Upon coming out of the brush I saw a small Nyala cow along a small dirt road. She was looking behind her much like a whitetail doe does. We decided to hang tight and see what was behind the bush. After about 10 minutes another cow came out followed by a very nice Nyala bull. The PH said he was the shooter and that’s all I needed. About 110 yd shot. I wait about 2 minutes for the proper shot, ease the safety off, pull the trigger and CLICK. At this time the Nyala who was smelling a cow, stops, and looks directly at us. I have a million things going through my mind all at once. My PH looks at me, says rack another round and take the shot as the Nyala won’t be there all day. I rack another round, (no round in the chamber) find the vital and take the shot. The Nyala kicks his hind legs in the air and heads into the brush. We walk to the spot, find some blood, and find him 30 yds from where I shot. A solid heart shot on a beautiful 29†and 8 “ bases on the Nyala.

As for my missing round, upon getting out the truck my PH always asks, “ Do you have one in the round and is the safety on?â€. I usually load the magazine and then cycle a bullet. I must have short shucked the bolt and not loaded the round.

Hands down Nyala is king of beauty and a great trophy to hunt. This was my first, taken at dusk along a Pineapple orchard in the Fish River Valley, Eastern Cape, RSA. It was misting rain and we were on our way back to the truck. Rifle hunt; .280 w/160 grain Accubond. One of my all time favorite calibers. LDK

What I consider the prettiest antelope. Mine is from KZN in July, 2005. It frosted at night, and we found him warming in the early morning sunlight 210 yds across a canyon. .375 Rem Ultra Mag, 300 gr Barnes TSX handload.
