I have received the following email from Peter Fick who hunts the Bubye Conservancy in Zimbabwe. I have a lion hunt scheduled there for 2014, but my understanding was that a decision has not been made yet. Now this. Someone must know something that we don't. Hi All I have just received confirmation that we have 20 lioness on quota for this year in the Bubye Valley Conservancy - permits in hand from National Parks. No problem at all to export to the U.S. Due to all the controversary surrounding the lion issues this will probably be the last time EVER that one will be able to hunt a wild lioness and export it. It has already been decided with all countries that from 2014 no more ;lioness will be able to be exported. For anyone interested in coming out this year for a lioness please contact me immediately. PRICE Daily Rate - 10 days @ $1 200/day ($12 000) + 2%levy ($240) Total = $12 240. Trophy fee = $5 000 + 4% levy ($200) = $5 200 Transfer - Bulawayo/camp/return = $ 300 TOTAL COST = $17 740. There will be other species of plains game at the trophy fees. Observers @ $250/day (they can hunt off the allocated species list) There are a couple of non trophy buffalo available too (35" dagga boys). For a LIONESS/BUFFALO/PLAINS game hunt the rate will be 15 days @ $1 475 = $22 125 Buff trophy fee $3 200. Serious folks - this is your last chance and such a shame the news arrived on the 11th hour. My web page is - www.peteficksafaris.com I will personally guarantee 100% success on the lioness (on my last male lion hunt we looked at almost 70 different males - never mind the females !) Thanks Kathi. I hadn't seen the discounted hunts section today. My hunt is actually with Shaun Buffee in 2014, and Shaun and I have been discussing this, this very morning via email, and whether I ought to come this year instead of next. Pete Fick also had me on his mailing list and that is what I received first, hence the post.

I will e-mail Paul Trethowan (Lion Scientist of the Bubye) and see what he says. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. If anyone seriously manages their wild lion population scientifically in Zimbabwe, it's the Bubye. Thanks Larry. I want a mature and old lioness to go with my male lion. There was a young guy from Cambridge leaving right after I had got there to hunt in September with PH Martin Nel. He had been studying the lions for quite some time and was going back to England for some R&R.

I do believe you can't NOT get a lion in the Bubye! They were such pests when calling for hyena last year. ledvm- - Please say hello to Paul from "Joe & Ruth in Pennsylvania", and he needs to come visit us ! We had a blast hyena hunting and lion spotting with him. Tried to dart a lioness to remove its tracking collar but it would not cooperate.

http://www.hunterproud.com/ In the attached link is an excellent 35 minute documentary on the Bubye Conservancy. At approximately the 22 minute mark is the ongoing lion conservation. Good luck UEG, hope it works out. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

The Bubye sure sounds like one of the top picks for lion in Africa, most males I've seen shot there sported spectacular manes and for what I've read the place is crawling with lions.

From BVC Lion Researcher: Basically lioness hunting has not been officially banned in Zim but we do not expect Parks to issue quotas in the future. BVC definitely want to continue lioness hunting and indeed will cull if they cannot hunt lioness. Together with the GM of BVC I recently represented BVC at a meeting with Parks and other scientists and stakeholders to discuss the way forward for Zim and lion hunting/management. Lioness were barely discussed at all but before the issue was brushed over Parks did agree in principle that a lioness quota could be issued when "good scientific evidence" showed that it was necessary or sustainable to do so. However, there was very little sympathy for BVC's position from anyone at the meeting, particularly parks and I think that it is highly unlikely that Parks will issue lioness quotas in the future regardless of what evidence is put in front of them. It is obviously a sensitive issue and I know that Parks are under a lot of political pressure internationally. Interestingly I did notice that in the 2011 petition to USFWS the authors state that "until recently lioness hunting has been permitted in Zimbabwe". That did not make sense to me since lioness hunting had not then (nor at any other time) been banned in this country. It makes me wonder if there was not some agreement/conversation between individuals within parks and the welfare organisations that we are not aware of. In summary, lioness hunting in Zim is not officially banned at this stage. That said, we do not expect a quota to be issued next year though the conservancy will apply for one nonetheless. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J.
