I was all set to go on a buffalo hunt in Kenya in July of 1977 when I got word in about May that the big game hunting was shut down. Just about got the chance .... Grrrrrr !!! I was just reading the African Hunting Gazette and Joe Coogan was writing about a bird hunt in Kenya. I don't much like travelling to far away places unless I can hunt and it would be nice to see some of that famous country if only to chase a damn guinea around ... I honestly cannot remember anyone avertising such hunts ???? Any suggestions, amigos !!! Thanks !

Why not hunt in Tanzania, then finish with a photo safari in Kenya?

That is a pretty good suggestion. However I am not much for photo safaris ....It might be the way, however, to see those famous areas that I have read about most my life. If I had a zebra striped bakkie I would probably gag, however.

I remember reading about bird hunts in Kenya in the now defunct Under Wild Skies magazine. Unfortunately, I don't remember the outfitter. DRSS

Cm'on guys, are you really so lazy you can't spend 10 seconds of google to answer a question? offers Kenyan bird hunting and more..... xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

I've known Joe Coogan since 2003 when we did a photo safari in Tanzania. He grew up in Kenya when a resident could actually hunt elephant on his own on an extended holiday. Those were the days. I talked to him shortly after returning from the Kenya bird shoot that Scruffy mentioned. He told me he had been very surpised that so much of the Kenyan bush that he had known still existed and the bird shooting was very good. Joe is very approachable and I'm sure he would be happy to talk about who he hunted with and how to arrange a shoot. He can be contacted through Berretta. Mark MARK H. Wow, at last I found really good info about sandgrouse shooting. Amazing birds! That 8 day package of birds, ducks & fishing looks affordable at $4k. But - buffalo / PG first! "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Yes, Nigel Archer offers bird hunts from the land bellow Killimanjaro (around Amboseli game reserve) in the south on up to the Northern Fronter (close to Ethiopia). www.nigelarchersafaris.com

why not do both in Tz? Many hunting areas of Tz today were hunted back in the good Ol days of safari from the 20's through to the 50's by the same hunting "heroes" we love reading about today! "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Hunter describing the early explorers and settlers of East Africa hunting is not about the killing but about the chase of the hunt.... Ortega Y Gasset

In August I'll be going to the Selous for a ten day buffalo hunt. Thanks in part to what I've read here, I'll be bringing along a little Beretta 28 gauge O/U and three boxes of shells for a bit of bird shooting. I'm not sure when my next trip to Africa will occur, but I'll certainly enjoy what time I have there to the best of my ability! I always love to do a bit of bird hunting on a safari. It does make more sense, I reckon, to do a buffalo hunt and a bit of bird shooting on the side... Tanzania ... you got a point, Bwanamich !

The Cottar family, long known for hunting in Kenya, still offers bird hunts in Kenya...probably some of the best in old fashioned tented safari camps!! I don't have a contact for them, I am sure Google willdo the trick...would love to do one of these too!! I agree on the photo safaris...we did one in Kenya in 2008 enroute to a great cruise...and many more from the ship, enough of that!! 470EDDY

Try Jaco at SAhunting. Didn't read the info on the bird hunts yet, but do these folks allow birds without a fee per bird. Was going to hunt birds in Zim and were told $5 a bird. I said, huh? must you charge for everything? Can go to Argentina and shoot a 1000 a day for the daily fee and cost of shells. Jeeese.. Robert Rurak shot sand grouse and maybe dove on a couple of occassions when hunting in Tanganyeka and Kenya. He was raised shooting quail and a better shotgun shot, then rifle shooter. Am hoping to shoot some birds next trip over, myself..

Didn't mean to imply that quanity of birds the important thing. But to pay good money to hunt the birds, and have to pay a fee , per bird too, just goes against the grain with me. Didn't see anything about costs to hunt birds in Kenya in the site shown. I loved walking up quail when young and we had some. And of course, grouse a lot of challenge. Took the god grandson to a shotgun shooting school a few weeks back and he learned very quick and the intstructor was all praises of him. Now we need to get him out hunting.

Tanganyika gained independence 50 years ago (1961)- Ruark was hunting well before, when birds were probably not even listed on a hunting license. I guess you would never have dreamed having had Obama's dad as president in those days either; times have certainly changed

We have just confirmed our readers and writers shoot with the Shooting Sportsman Magazine for August. Everything is done on a fixed price including up to 1500 cartridges on that one. I'm also going to be bird shooting for most of September (no fee per bird but cartridges not included,)so I'm looking forward to this season. We sometimes charge per bird here in the UK but there is no day rate etc, so that is a little different. With regards to Kenya I think the sand grouse hunting there is supposed to be amazing. I've shot the same birds elsewhere and they are superb sport, but the issue with the hunt is that is it a short time in the mng and then the same at dusk. There are some other options of what to do through the day. In Namibia you can shoot the same sorts of numbers on private game ranches and have some big game hunting to do through the day. Incidentally Sandgrouse on the Braai are a superb pre dinner snack. Kiri

I saw the hunt offer in Shooting Sportman magazine... looks very interesting. I have shot birds in Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa and have never been charged extra... I guess it depends on the outfitter. In my opinion, sand grouse shooting at a waterhole is some of the world's finest sport. I am heading to Kenya in August with the wife to do a bit of sight-seeing and try and catch the migration in the Masai Mara. I may now try and see if I can work in a day of wingshooting! I certainly hope so... ten days in Africa without pulling a trigger will be a very different experience for me! Banana, Yes we put the trip together for the SS and it looks like we are all set now. I can't wait to get out there again. If you are in Kenya it would be a shame not to try and get a flight or two in. Naki, That's exactly what I did the first time. They were great. The next time I marinaded in a little balsamic and garlic along with olive oil and fresh herbs. I left the breasts on the crown and cooked the whole thing as one unit which was very good indeed.
