Now that's a CLOSE encounter and without any firearms, it appears. Not something that I would care to be in the middle of. Interesting, how the one individual is smiling and showing his shoes. Wonder what his and the others' reactions would have been had the lion dragged him out of the truck feet first.

It looks like Kaokoveld/Skeleton Coast in Namibia. It's suprising how many animals are actually able to survive in that desolate region.

This is the only animal on the face of the Earth that simply scares me silly! That S.O.B.is hard to hit, and harder to stop, in a charge! I'll take a bait set-up, thank you.

We were hunting in Westwood in Zimbabwe in the early 90's. One morning we saw a herd of buffalo which was obviously being hurried by lions.

We decided to leave them for a couple of hours, and come back later. Hoping that the lions would have killed one, and we might be able to get one.

Well, we came back, left Walter in the truck under a tree, and went off.

15 minutes later a number of lionesses jumped ahead of us about 20 yards away, and ran off.

A mainless male was left behind, and he just sat there on his hind legs looking at his departed friends.

Roy said I can shoot him if I wanted, so I put a bullet through his neck. He dropped down.

A few seconds later, a lioness came straight for us at full speed, growling in the process.

We had her covered, and Roy was saying "don't shoot! Don't shoot!"

Never mind what he was saying, I remember I had her in my scope, and regardless of what he was saying, as soon as her head filled my scope I was going to pull the trigger!

She stopped a few yards from us, turned and went to her fallen friend and stood by him.

Roy said I could shoot her if I wanted, as he had a license for one, so I dropped her too.

Afterwards I told him I was ready to shoot that lioness if she hadn't changed her mind.

He said he would have shot her himself if she came a couple of yards further.

That was the only time I have ever been charged by any animal, and I cannot remember either of us being scared at all.

May be because she was in full view, and we were sure of stopping her.

I just returned two weeks ago from Namibia where we spent three days working with Dr. “Flippy†of the Kunene Lion Project attempting to track down and radio collar this lion.
The attack occurred in the Skeleton Coast Park, near the Purros Conservancy and about 20 miles from the coast and west of Etosha Park. Our camp during this time was at approximately 18° 53’ S, 12° 49’ E.

The real story behind the attack is that the lion was pursued at a high rate of speed for nearly 4k by the safari vehicle full of eco-tourists until he sought refuge on the grass “islandâ€. Two more vehicles were radioed in and they surrounded the lion effectively blocking his escape. Video taken during that interval shows the lion becoming more agitated and the voices on the tapes prove that the people were aware of the situation that they had created.

The safari operators responsible for creating the situation are the only persons allowed inside the park in this area.

Knowing the circumstances, I’d root for the lion.

Rancherjack,

Was the operator "Wilderness Safaris" by any chance? I remember several areas my wife and I wanted to drive into while heading south from Hartmanns Valley, that were off limits to everyone by Wilderness Safari tourists. I think one was around the area you mention.

Ps. Wilderness Safaris ( http://www.wilderness-safaris.com/ ) own a huge number of photo safari camps thruout southern Africa. And are very anti-hunting as far as I've understood. Frowner

Jack,

It's sad that this supposedly "responsible" company keeps everyone else out of large areas in Namibia, yet they behave like they did with the lion... shame

I have to admit that my wife and I were kind of pissed off, as we were used to driving wherever we wanted. Then in the middle of nowhere in Kaokoveld (which is as much as the middle of nowehere as you'll be able to find in Namibia), we'd come across tracks with signs that said no entry. Frowner
