Wasn't sure where to post this. Could have gone into Books, or Africa travel, but I'll post it here. Drums of the Morning is authored by Wayne Grant, who is a well known PH and author of "Into the Thorns" a great book on leopard hunting. The Drums book is largely about lion hunting.

Anyway, I bought the book with the intention of taking it to read on the plane during my trip this summer to Ugalla with lion at the top of the list. I've only glanced at the book and really love it at first blush, but plans have totally changed. This book is not going with me on the plane.

It is a beautiful book, it's just too big and heavy for a travel book, but more importantly, it looks like Wayne hunted quite a bit on the Ugalla River, so while the intelligence is a bit dated, I want to read this book before I leave.

Like "Into the Thorns", "Drums of the Morning" looks like a very well written and put together book.

Now any recommendations on what to take on the plane to read?

Thanks for the referral. I’ll look for it.

You’re a better man than me if you can stay awake during down time to read while on safari.

I simply can’t do it.

Whenever I’m still, I fall asleep!

One time, I took Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Another time, I took Emerson’s collected essays.

Might as well have been soporifics by Sanofi.

Put me right to sleep, even while sitting in lion and leopard blinds.

On the airplane or in the tent, it was even worse.

In such comfortable places, horizontal = unconscious.

No more books in the baggage for this boy.

Too tiring! Big Grin

Mike,

I'm with you. I generally can't read much once in camp but I do read quite a bit on the plane.

I bought copies of both Wayne's books as reprints from in outfit in Texas (the name currently escapes me) last summer. They were both great reads.

I've been devouring the Wilbur Smith "Courteney" series on audio book lately. Almost mindless listening. Brian Hearn's White Hunters is always an enjoyable read, as well.

Lavaca -

I was hunting with Wayne in 2018. We were hunting the Ibanda/Rumanyika GMA. He was just finishing up his second book. We killed a 49.5" Buffalo, biggest of either one of our lives. We saw, lost and re-found that buffalo three times, before we got an opportunity at him.

Wayne is an very good PH and lots of fun to hunt with. His stories never stop and the days were painfully easy.

I never read either book. I probably need to.

Last time I spoke to him, he was pursuing "adventure tourism". He was establishing a ultra footrace called "the first peoples race" IIRC.

He asked me to come over and pre-ride a bicycle course but it never happened. It was in or around Bulawayo.

There was a very nicely produced YouTube but I can't find it now.

This post is timed perfectly for me. I really enjoyed “Into the Thorns” and have been looking for a new book to read. I’ve also been considering booking for lion a few years down the road so maybe this book will help me get over my current case of cold feet…

Thanks for the recommendation!

I met Wayne Grant many years ago when on safari in Zimbabwe. He was in camp with another party. A great story-teller and true gentleman.

Steve,

If my geography is right, that's up near the Rwanda and Uganda border, but that's a fantastic buffalo anywhere. Hope there are some good ones in Ugalla.

Well that's a story worth telling Steve!
