US firearms export paperwork

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen!

For those that celebrate Thanksgiving, I wish you and your families a Happy and SAFE Thanksgiving.

About March of this year we were all in a tizzy about the required paperwork needed to take our favorite firearms out of the US of A for hunting or competition. Eventually our government capitulated so that the usual Form 4457 was sufficient UNTIL the computer based system was fixed.

Like myself, I'm sure that many of you are traveling out of the US to hunt in 2016. None of us want stuck in that morass again.

The question is: Has anyone heard if an update of computer system has occurred or any status of the issue?

Just trying to get ahead of the 8-Ball, folks.

Watch yer 6!

Haven't hear anything new as of now but, last July when we took our guns to TSA for the 4457 forms the agent, who was rather curt, told me that "next year you'll have to do the new export form". So I'm sure more fun things are in our future.

In dealing with TSA over firearms I was put off by their attitude both on leaving the country and returning. They acted like they were doing us a favor by handing us the 4457 forms and checking the serial numbers. When we returned a TSA agent was walking around the Atlanta airport gun area complaining loudly about the stupid people he had to deal with. He's lucky I'm not his direct supervisor.

Many times it has to do with where you live and the attitudes of the local culture.

elk hunter,

I think you may have meant US Customs and not TSA. TSA has nothing to do with issuing 4457's. I only say that so that newbies to international travel with guns won't get confused.

Anything new on this front?

Leaving in 6 weeks

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

I just came through ATL last Saturday from Zim and S Africa.

Same old 4457 process and it was very smooth.

US Custom guys were friendly and asked about the hunt. No animosity whatsoever and it was quick and quite painless.

Nobody mentioned anything new on the horizon and I didn't ask.

What I am always amazed about is how much hassle you get depends on the individual you are dealing with, not the procedure itself.
