My son and I are off to Zim., next Augst. Last trip for us was July, 2008. We flew both our guns together, in 1 aluminum case. We flew Delta to JNB, and had zero issues. This trip we are again flying Delta to JNB, overnighting, and off to Zim the next day. Most likely SAA. Since our flight with SAA didn't originate in the US, are there weight restictions on the firearm case that we need to be aware of? I can weigh the case with both guns, and the equipment we will take, in it, probably today, in my basement. Just wondered if we needed to be aware of something over there, that we don't know about. Thanks! Mad Dog

The weight restriction on Int'l travel for an individual piece of luggage is 70 pounds.

I'd suggest you don't worry about it until about June or July next year. SAA appear to be changing their firearms requirements pretty much monthly at the moment.

shakir, you are quite right, but I wanted to plan ahead on 2 individual gun cases, as opposed to 1 case. I also understand the international weight limit vs. local/in country, but wondered about SAA restrictions, since we don't originate the flight in the US, but rather JNB. Mad Dog

Mad Dog The usual/traditional rule is that if you came from the US and have the heavier luggage allowance then it should be honoured all the way through but some airlines are becoming increasingly reluctant to do that and SAA especially seem to be changing their baggage (and firearms) requirements increasingly often. My advice would be to wait until shortly before you're due to fly and then check their current requirements then. Quite frankly, it's not very likely that the requirements will remain the same between now and then.

There is zero chance that two guns in an aluminum case will violate anyone's weight restrictions. Don't worry about it. When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.

I took two guns of my own just a few weeks ago in the same gun case, an SKB. No problem at all with weight! Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

If you are famous and fly first class it is 70 pounds. I am packing today and the weight limit for for us peasants in coach is 50 pounds. I spent my extra money on a Bwana Moja buffalo target and reloading supplies to shoot it instead of first class.

I advise you to check with TSA before you fly. They change like the wind. Recently, we were instructed to store all ammo in our locked gun cases (for all future flights). When leaving Jo'burg, Delta employees insisted all ammo be in locked boxes stored in our check in luggage. As Steve said, wait until your trip nears. Rules are likely to change again by then. On coach, 50 lbs is the standard max you can have. I took 3 guns my last trip to Zim and United popped me for $150 (56 lbs) my client was at 52 lbs and paid the same. TSA has been pretty consistant, so has Delta,....except in Jo'burg. The SAP imposes the ammo rule in the locked check-in baggage on the carriers. It isn't Delta or SAA. Bob Bob DRSS DSC SCI NRA & ISRA

I think you should clarify these details with your travel specialist - you are using one, I hope. IIRC if the ticket for all the flights is combined and issued at the same time, here in the USA -the USA International weight limits "Should " apply. Some local airline personel may not know or understand that [or may be fishing for "a little something"] and may need educated. I think that you risk getting stuck with domestic weight linits IF you have separate tickets - but you really should be getting this info from Gracy, or Kathi, or Steve !

Hey Mike: Good luck over there. I fly coach but they always seem to let me get away with a 70 pound duffle bag. It might just be familiarity with the checkin' gal at the United counter at O'hare here in Chicago. All of my flights originate on United. It's a special "oversized" baggage checkin counter I walk up to. I can't imagine two guns and an aluminium case being more than 50 lbs. anyway. Sorry fellas for puttin' out the wrong information. It just galls me when someone gets the facts incorrect.

For TODAY: International flight originating in US: (free) weight limit = 50 lbs Between 50-70 lbs, fee will be charged (prob $150) Sometimes they don't even weight gun cases, sometimes they do. Flight from RSA to Zim: SHOULD be on same international itinerary, so same weight rules SHOULD apply. If not, SAA has weight limit of 20 kg (44 lbs) total for all bags, per person. Over that is $150 charge. All of these are subject to "local interpretation" and are only what I experienced on a recent trip. Use enough gun... Shoot 'till it's dead, especially if it bites.

I have to agree with Trademark Texan. My recent trip to Namibia was a 50 lb limit, two bags per person, and maybe that was due to fact my flight originated in the US. I weighed my luggage the morning I left for the airport by weighing all my luggage and Tuffpak on the same scale that the animals I shot were weighed on. It worked fine and showed me which luggage my wife and I had needed to be stripped a little more. If I made any change at all, I would use a backpack for a carry-on for easier movement in and out of airports.

Two rifles in soft cases, extra scope, a few clothing items and a bog pod in a Tuff Pak puts me at just under the 50# limit. I don't take two rifles, but double up with one of my hunting partners rifle. No need for two rifles of my own as my PH has one in the same calibur as I use. Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

The USA TSA rules require a hard case that locks securely for the rifle (or rifles). Before checking it is important to go to the US Customs counter and register the rifles on a little form that they have for taking personal effects abroad. This allows hassle-free return to the US (rifles have been seized on occasion) and it also validates your onwership of the gun overseas if and when asked for your 'US gun license'. the biggest problem may be ammo. You are allowed 5 kg (11 lb) per person, internationally. That's about 130 rounds of 338 WM or 90 rounds of 416 Rigby. they must be in an 'approved for airline' container, made of cardboard, wood, plastic, and/or metal (I forget). MTM boxes are OK, as are original packing of ammo. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.
