I assume this is the article:

American arrested in Zimbabwe free pending court
Reuters

Tue 9 Oct 2007, 9:39 GMT

HARARE, Oct 9 (Reuters) - An American citizen arrested by police in Zimbabwe
on charges of smuggling and illegal possession of arms and ammunition was
freed pending a court appearance later on Tuesday, a U.S. embassy official
said.

Zimbabwe's state radio reported late on Monday that the man, Leslie Francis
Howell Jr from Florida, was arrested at Victoria Falls airport on Friday
when he tried to board a plane with two pistols and 300 rounds of
ammunition.

Police could not immediately comment but officials at the U.S. embassy in
Harare confirmed the arrest.

"He was arrested but was released and his passport has been taken so that he
will not leave the country," an embassy official told Reuters.

"We understand he will appear in court sometime today," said the official,
who would not confirm suggestions by diplomatic sources that the man was on
a hunting trip in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said the American was expected to be
charged in court in the north-western town of Hwange.

The man arrived in Harare on Sept. 21 and had been travelling around the
country armed until his arrest, ZBC said.

He "is suspected to be part of a ploy by the United States to scare off
tourists and to depict Zimbabwe as an unsafe destination," the radio said.

Zimbabwe is grappling with a severe economic crisis which critics blame on
President Robert Mugabe's policies and has left the country with the world's
highest inflation rate and surging unemployment.

Mugabe, 83, and in power since independence from Britain says sabotage and
economic sanctions by Western powers, including the United States, has hurt
the economy.

I did not see where he was a hunter when I first read the story. I was wondering where NE 450 No 2 is... Eeker

Now that we have his name, does anyone know him?

This is some kind of sham. Les is one of us and a AR member. I doubt it had anything to do with scare tactics. More probable to hunt with a pistol and or, target shoot. I imagine he's sweating this one and can't imagine what kind of monkey shines they (Zim officials) are pulling. I hope he makes out OK. LDK

When leaving Zim in September, we had a bit of a tense situation. Five of us were traveling together and checked 10 bags. The slacker checked us in placed all of the bags in one nonhunter's name. Therefore, there was ammo in bags that did not correlate with Zim gun permit holders names. About an hour of bag searchs and repositioning ammo under the supervision of a radio toting swaggering dwarf finally got us squared away with a terse lecture. Never mind the baggage check in screw up. There is probably a VERY logical explanation(in our terms).

Of course, arresting someone who is there hunting wouldn't scare anyone else off. Roll Eyes

I can think of a lot of places I'd rather be than a jail cell in Zimbabwe. I hope they just charge him another $10 million ZIM and let him leave for home.

I wonder if he had the Zim pistol permit. I'm sure there is much more to the story. Anyone know who he was hunting with? We could get more info from them.
