I have my first safaris comming up next month and I am going into the Limpopo area after flying into Johanesburg. Do I need to get any African money along the way or do you guys usually just use American money? How much do you take in African funds as well and how do you tell what it is worth? What kind of currency is African money? Is it Rands. These questions may sound dumb to most of you but I remind you I am very new to this Safaris thing and I don't do a lot of traveling to figure out all the ins and outs. Thanks Phil

Figure out how much money you would need on a vacation here in the USA and then double it. There are opportunities to buy trinkets or tip for services that you will feel embarassed if you don't have the proper money (voice of experience here ) You can always exchange it after you're done.

You need to do a currency conversion right away, and I'm assuming your aware of your Outfitters prices: in USD or Rand? Ask him to convert your money. The banks (local and abroad) will rip you a new one. Lately the conversion has been 1 USD = 7.3 Rand. Take a few hundred rand with you and use an ATM if you need more. Check with your home bank if they have an agrement with any particular SA bank for free ATM use and you probably won't have to pay any additional charges. If you prefer to tip the local staff in Rands rather than Rollars take an additional few thousand Rands.

Lately the conversion rate has dropped to below R7 for one US. So at banks and other places you are going to get around R6.75 for one US. But they always give better rates with traveller cheques and the ATM idea is always good as well there is an ATM even in the smallest towns. Frederik Cocquyt I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

A handy web address to check the latest forex rates is http://www.absa.co.za/absacoza/content.jsp?VGN_C_ID=f6c...CM100000ce17040aRCRD Look at the column "Bank Buying Notes/T Cheques" to see how many Rand you'll get for each Dollar. (US Dollar is 3rd from the bottom) Today ... you'll get R6.7767 for each US$1.00 Johan

Ok! I guess i missed something. In both my trips to RSA I literally drove all over the country except in the Kalahari. US dollars and CC were welcomed everywhere. I saw no need for having any rand at all. The only time I converted any US dollars to local currency was in Zambia when the tracker were going home after our safari and the dollars would be useless in the bush. We paid Garry Kelly and he handled everything. Couldn't be simpler. Mark MARK H. You can use either, but if you want to buy a coke or a snack at a gas station in an out-of-the-way place, you should have local currency. Same for tips, other than tips to the PH. I am not aware of any "black market" rate for rands in SA, unlike Zim. So I don't see any advantage to using anything other than an ATM to get your local currency. What I want to know is when is the dollar going to climb out of the shitter???? I've recently used ATM's in South Africa for my foreign exchange, and sometimes a Bank's [Rennies] ForEx booth in the tourist areas. I usually have a few Rand with me as I arrive at the Johannesburg [leftover from the last trip!] and I go directly to the ATMs found in the terminal and withdraw a few thousand rand for small purchases around the country. I also use credit cards for anything more than a few hundred Rand and have never had a problem doing so. [It's really handy if your outfitter will take a credit card too!] The exchange rate as noted above is 7 to 1 +/-, so just divide all Rand prices by 7 to see what your paying in Dollars. It is very easy to get around in RSA on credit cards with a few Rand for little things. Have a great trip! Les
