I am new to the site and thought I could learn a few things here. I have been wanting to plan a trip to hunt Buffalo and Plainsgame and had a few questions. I have learned a pile on here reading for a couple months and one thing I have learned is that it is tough to plan a trip. There are so many places to have a good hunt but it is hard to choose an outfitter from all of the choices as well.

I have thoughts that the Save area is a good place for buff and plainsgame.
I also would like to know your thoughts on the Omay area for Buffalo and plainsgame.
If I wanted to lengthen my hunt and try for a Leopard as well as the Buff and plainsgame which area would I be best to try in Zim?
I think I will enjoy a hunt no matter where but AS a lot of you know the place better than I do I thought I would ask for a little advice.
Thank you guys and gals.
Ron

Welcome to AR Ron. If you want to add Leopard, your most likely looking at 16+ days. If you hunt on private property in Zim, it can be at night over bait. During the day you can shoot bait animals, plains game or buffalo if they are present. If not, get the cat first...period! Then go after Buff full tilt. Zim would be a great option.
Cheers,
David

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Most areas of Zim offering buffalo are a bit short on PG ... that is due to the two legged predatory species homo trapiens.

Also it's not smart to pay DG rates while hunting PG. Keep your buff hunt to 7 days and then add on a few days for PG at the PG rate. I am not saying that you won't see PG in the Zambezi Valley etc, but you won't be whacking and stacking either.

Save is an exception to the above ... it's still private and poaching is under control. Another area worth looking at is Sengwa Research ... it's like the Zambezi Valley minus the tsetse flies, with more PG and just as many buff and elephant if not more. Drop me a line if interested in that option.

Hi Ron

I think the best advice one can give regarding African hunting is to be very cautious of cheap hunts. Time and time again clients come back dissapointed having been on a "special/deal"hunt.

The same applies for buffalo. Beware of areas in Zim selling "7 day buffalo specials." You will find that most quailty Buff areas sell their buff on 10 days because they can while the areas selling the "7 day special" sell them at that because their areas are not in demand as a buffalo hunting destination and as a result they need to make it attractive enough to lure clients. The ironic thing is those are the areas that one would need more time to get a quality buff hunt and get a respectable trophy. This does not apply to late season when there are some 7 day specials out there in decent areas and often if you are prepared to wait till the end of season been Oct/Nov you can pick up some great hunts at decent prices.

If you are after a buff and a big plains game bag I would second Russ saying that Sengwa Research is a nice area with good plains game and fair buff however the Save and Lemco would be hard to beat.

If you are serious about a buff/ leopard package you can hunt the prime areas in the Zambezi valley where you will get both and its a 14 day hunt. On a hunt like this though you will not get a huge plains game bag but will pick up say 5 or so of the plains game species including you buff an leopard.

People that I would reccomend that you speak to if you decide on the Save are Jonney Hulme (Zam bezi Hunters) Roger Whittal, the Duckworths (Makore Safaris) or Mike Payne (Save safaris) Hope that helps. Happy new year by the way! cheers Buzz

May I ask why there are no recommendation to hunt Matetsi and Chete?

Both are are prime hunting areas for everything Zimbabwe has to offer!

Is the price of hunting these areas higher?

Great info guys. i would like to know why not to hunt those areas as well in Chete and Matetsi.

From the info i have gathered and looked at for quite a while on here I would think for my first trip to Zim i should be looking into the Save as it has a lot of animals and good quality. Thanks for the help guys.

My Dad and I hunted Save Valley in 2008 with Zambezi Hunters. Great place and we saw a lot of plains game. Our main goal was to each get a buffalo and any plains game after would be a bonus. Below is my hunt report of our trip.

I have heard that large quantity's of buffalo have been removed from the Matetsi/Wankie areas to re stock a new private hunting area with very few good buff being taken this season from theses areas.
This does not include the river blocks though.
