Hope this is ok for this topic. All the posts I've seen in tropies.. are already mounted. Curious thoughts and opinions on mounting these Wildebeest. Trying to decide Shoulder vs Skull mount. I'm weighing the trophy vs cost vs first trip tendency to go overboard. I will return, but will not necessarily hunt same animals unless an exceptional specimen presents an opportunity.

Blue measured 29 1/2 using a tape around the face of the horn to mid depth at the widest point. Tip to Tip across skull 48 4/8, 12" around the boss's

Black larger horn goes 27 1/8' with 10 1/8'
boss.

From both the wildebeest I would recommend the black for a shoulder mount.
You will not get a black that size easily the blue however is average. Your measurements sounds big on it 29 1/2" but that can only be measured in a straighht line only the widest point to point. If it was the correct measurement than it sure was big.

The blue wildebeest makes a a very nice flatskin and the european mount of the horns also looks good.

To summarize I would make the black a shoulder mount and the blue a european and flatskin.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

I agree; mount the Black and flat rug the Blue with a skull mount of the horns. Use the tail of the Black for a swish. Blue's make beautiful rugs, so hopefully you have a full skin. Congrats on both trophies. David

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

I was thinking exactly what Safari-Hunt posted. I targeted a blue wildebeest cow while in RSA just for the flat skin rug, very nice. That bull would make a great skull mount too, which I favor more and more, particularly on African game. That black though, would make a great shoulder mount. That's what I'll do with mine eventually, and it wasn't quite as heavily bossed as yours. They're just so ugly they're handsome! Big Grin

That's an exceptional Black. You certainly need to have him mounted. If you don't have a Blue mounted, then I would do it too, as it's nice to have one of each in your trophy room. I do and people are interested in noting the differences.

By your stated measurements both are Bronze heads with the Black being the better.

Whatever you decide, have both the capes tanned and put them in your freezer. This way you can enjoy the skull mounts for a while and retain the option of doing shoulder mounts later.

How about both mounts together on a single floor pedestal?

The Black, especially deserves a shoulder mount. Heavy boss, long (still sharp) tips and the nose "brush" is really thick. He's a fine animal. I agree with others on the Blue, especially the flatskin rug. They are very pretty. If you are sure you are going back and would look for another one, do the skull and flatskin.

You only take one first safari and it will always be the best. Shoulder mounts is my suggestion.
