Is 308 banned in most African calibers? (Obviously, for PG.)

Aglifter,

I think you need to rephrase your question, it doesn't make sense? .308 is a bore calibre???

For years I have heard about banned military calibers for civilian sporting use in various countries around the world. I'm beginning to think it's legend. Does anyone have a source for facts? I can find nothing in a search on the www.

It's not banned in African countries but I understand you can't transit France with any firearm chambered for a military cartridge.

"I think you need to rephrase your question, it doesn't make sense? .308 is a bore calibre???"

Ah, and finally someone who understands the true meaning of the work caliber (or calibre if you like). It's refreshing to this American.

WPN,

France Belgium and a coupleof other European countries bann the use of military calibres(either modern or obselete). In the case of the 308, you are technically not allowed the 308 win as it is the 7.62 NATO cartridge. However as far as I know you would be allowed a 308 Norma Mag, (even though I don't know why you'd want one!!)

There was a list put up on the European forum a few months ago if you do a search.

France and New Caledonia.

Perhaps some of the ex-French possessions in Africa?

I originally posted the controlled caliber list for France, here's a link:

https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...=806107444#806107444

I have never checked to see if the former French colonies (C.A.R., Cameroon, Benin, Burkina Faso to name some of those that have big game hunting) also consider them illegal for hunting but I think it would be safe to assume that the colonial legacy means they do. As for transiting France, bags and rifle cases checked through to destination are not examined for caliber denomination to my knowledge. If you want to go through customs and bring them onto French soil then you would be importing and a specific permit would be required.
