I'm with you, I actually like hunting the small ones. I've still got to get another Klipspringer so I can do a full mount. The last one severely damaged his cape on the rocks. I may put Grysbok at the top of the list this year.

The first went to Africa I was not interested in hunting any of the small guys. But we had some time and I ended up hunting a steenbok. I found it very enjoyable and now after a couple of more trips I have been able to take steenbok, duiker, klipspringer and mtn reedbuck. Now when I plan a trip I allways try to include time for hunting the small guys.

Good Hunting,

Here's the Steenbok that I took with Ndumo Hunting Safaris in Namibia last August. I didn't realize how big it was until after the shot when everyone else got excited.

I enjoy the small guys as fun targets of opportunity.

Here is a 2" plus Grysbok, taken with a 375H&H, thankfully, I had a solid along and slipped it into the chamber.

Here is a klipspringer which I took on a long, long elephant walk, with my double rifle!

Next small guy will be a ..., taken with a ...., well, who knows!

Look closely at those two taken with Doubles. The fangs are just barely visible as they retract like a cats and the hooves are honed to razor-sharpness on the rocks. Not to mention the poison-filled stickers at the top of their heads.

DAMN nice klippies by the way.

Like a lot of others, I was not interested in the little guys when I started my first trip. After seeing steenbuck on other stalks, I decided to try for one. It was one of the most fun hunts of the trip, it was also my only unsuccessful, in terms of trophy. It was such fun sneaking around in the brush and tall grass, judging trophies, trying to get a clear shot, and in my case a clean miss on a real nice five plus incher. Really a lot of fun!
Will definitely be on my list if I can get back again.

That's a HELL of a duiker.

I got a terrific steenbok on my first safari in 95 because I was hunting with a mate who insisted I "shoot that bloody steenbok"....I didn't know what one was from memory.

Little bugger went nearly 6 inches Smiler

Thanks guys!
I was very lucky. Yours is very fine too, 375 fanatic! Congrats!
It was shot with PH Russell Lovemore in EC in 2006. Close to Grahamstown. It green-measured 5 5/8". Haven't measured it later, but I guess I should.
Russell had seen this one on several occasions in a specific area. We went there two days in a row and managed to get him without to much hazzle. Smiler He was feeding and walking when we stalked in on him on his left side. Later we discovered this "little" fellow was blind on that left eye.

I guess he's a very good one. On the other side a great numbers of duikers are shot, so getting into the top half of the record book is a difficult task. Smiler

A 6" steenbok is nothing to be ashamed of!! Smiler
Any pictures, Blair?

It's actually a steenbok with oryx horns on it, Rudi Big Grin

No pics Anders, it's in a storage compartment waiting for its release onto a trophy room wall when I stop being a apartment dweller.

I shot it with a 7mmSTW, with a rear lung shot to protect the cape; when we approached the brave little bugger tried to have a go..Eeker thumb

I would think it would be more challenging to shoot one of these little guys than something like an impala or Kudu. They are jsut such tiny animals I'd be afraid I'd miss the vitals and that I'd blow the little thing up when I hit him.

It sounds like solids are the way to go. What other calibers and rounds have you guys used to shoot these little antelopes? I remember shooting rabbits with 150 grain core-lokts from my 30-06 one afternoon - very few looked like rabbits on approach. I'd hate to walk up and see I blew up my trophy duiker, steenbok, etc.

Those small ones sure can be tough as well, Blair! Smiler

Al, I have shot mine with different rifles/loads. For the bigger ones, like mt. reedbuck/oribi/vaal rhebok I think a regular soft point from any caliber normally wouldn't do to much damage. The really small ones, like grysbok, dik-dik and blue duiker are another deal. I have used shotgun or .222/.223 which will work fine, even with soft points, IMO. I might have been lucky, though! Smiler
My klipspringer and steenbok was shot with .30-06 sprg. and Nosler Partition and Nosler Partition Gold respectively. It work fine, but it might not have. Go for solids or smaller calibers is my tip! Try to avoid placing the bullet right on the shoulder. Right behind is better if possible, but this is easier said than done, I think.

The small ones are great to hunt as a specific hunt not just a target of opportunity. I have taken 9 of the tiny 10 of southern Africa, I personally don't count Mt Reedbuck (which have also taken) nor the Vaal Rhebok which I haven't taken but have spent time chasing (only 5 days). I need my Suni which I have pursued too many times.

I have shot a majority of my tiny antelope with a .375 and trophy bonded sledgehammer solids, as I have been out hunting dangerous game as well at the time. I have had to have extensive cape work done when I have shot them with softs from a .300 WSM or with a .270, etc. The .375 solids go in and out with just two small holes and hardly any damage to the capes. I have recently ordered and received some Barnes solids for my .325 WSM to try out, and may get some solids made up for the .300 WSM as well.

Thanks!
Haven't had any of them officially measured. The blue duiker was actually 2 4/16" on both horns. According to the SCI book (think it was the last edition) it was only two other blue duikers with longer horns. But the bases were not as thick as the top three. It still might be top 5. Smiler
Can't remember the dik-dik, but think it tied for nr 11 for the Damara subspecie.
I have been very fortunate with the small guys! Smiler
Hope to get them officially measured soon. Problem is that it's quite a long drive to my nearest measurer.

These little guys are harder to hunt than kudu.
Fifteen years ago my buddy was on his first hunt. Out ot the vehicle on the first day they came on a steenbuck and the PH said "Shoot it!" He and the other hunter looked at each other and both said "We won't shoot Bambi". Neither realized it was probably a world record. The PH was really pissed!

Here's a Livingstone's suni and a red duiker. Both were shot in Kwa-Zulu-Natal in 2006 in jungle-like conditions. I brought the red duiker back to camp before taking pictures, but the suni's picture was taken near the "jungle" where he was shot. Both were shot with the .375 H&H using trophy bonded sledgehammer solids. I'm looking forward to using the .325 WSM with the Barnes solids on the few remaining small antelope that I haven't taken yet. Here's a sharpe's grysbok that I took with the .375 in Zimbabwe in October of 2007, along with a klipspringer taken on the same hunt, again with the .375 and solids. I've also taken a 5 1/2" Steenbok and two very respectable Grey Duiker, but with the .300 WSM and softs. Never again, after using the solids.
