Air Canada and South African-Ammo on plane question

I have done a search and still it is not clear what to do with my ammo. I am flying from Canada on Air Canada and also on South African to Johanessburg for my hunt and can not find what they want me to do with my ammo. Should I have it in a locked case? I would rather not because I will then have 3 pieces of luggage. I was planning on taking it in factory boxes in the suitcase. Does anyone know the rules on this for sure or is it still dependent on the person checking your bags?
Thanks

I have flown on South African Air several times, I always carried my ammo in the same case as my rifles.

Take original boxes and no more than 4 kilos on SAA (8.8 lbs). Put them inside your check in bag/suitcase. Air Canada may have their own regs, but so does SAA. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Nube,
Air Canada rules are 5 Kilos of ammunition, transported in locked baggage and separate from the guns which must be unloaded, trigger-locked and in a locked case. You will be asked to sign a declaration as to the gun being unloaded and weight being under 5 kilos.
The wording on ammo packaging is a little vague for MTM style plastic ammo boxes but original factory boxes are specifically allowed. Rubber band them securely so nothing comes apart and pack them to minimize movement in your luggage.
If you haven't already done so get Air Canada to flag your ticket file that you are travelling with firearms. That way there are no suprises.

Do not tell anybody but I have never traveled without ammo in the same case as my rifles.

Also I have traveled with as much as 194lbs of ammo [pre 911] and 64lbs of ammo [post 911].
Don't ask, don't tell.

Air Canada wants ammo in a container NOT with guns ( can be your other checked bag), Max 5 kilos, No markings indicating explosives, factory ammo boxes(just remember that if you reload you are the manufacture). Also you want to call AC and confirm that your check in info indicates you will be traveling with guns. They will inform you on the phone all their regs. Also don't be suprised when you get charged $57 CAD each way by them for the guns.

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

I don't know anything about Air Canada, however, on 4 trips with United/SAA I have carried ammunition in my rifle case and in soft sided luggage. I have never been aasked for the weight, nor, has any agent weighed the ammunition, to my knowledge.

Canuck32 is right on the money, on all counts.

Buy a small MTM type ammo case to put your ammo in (the one for shotgun ammo and choke tubes works great) and put it inside your checked bag. I locked my ammo box on one trip and not on the other...the time I locked it, it was inspected in Frankfurt...so I left it unlocked the next time and put a combination lock inside the case in case the inspectors felt it should be locked.

Here are some pics of my ammo from my last trip to Africa...

Check in with your rifles WAY early. My last flight (out of Calgary) was at 7 AM, so I went to check in at 4:30 AM, just as the AC staff comes on shift. It took an hour and a half to get my firearm checked even though I was first in line. It hasn't taken that long any other time...just depends on who you get I guess. Most in Calgary are good as there are lots of foreign hunters coming and going from Calgary. But better to be safe than sorry.

Cheers,
Canuck

Just returned from my second trip to South Africa via South African Airways. Absolutely no hassle over ammo, which I carried in a metal box within a soft side bag, all cartridges in original cardboard containers via Winchester and RWS, 40 rounds each, and ample for two weeks on site. Two of us did have our rifles misplaced via the airlines, however, thanks to SAA and the efforts of Air 2000, our rifles were delivered via SAA to our site in Limpopo Province the next day.
