I can remember when Richard Leakey did something similar to that, my question is, would not have it had a better effect on many levels to have offered the ivory for sale on the open market?

Put it in the market at a really LOW price to lower the value of poachers ivory.

Must have some effect.

Can't help but think they just made ivory more scarce and scarcity affects price and demand. In other words, they just made all the ivory still walking around out there more valuable.

I had those same thought when Leakey did it. I guess I don't understand the real world, but if the market was suddenly flooded with cheap legal ivory, I have the silly idea it would dry up the poachers market.

Crazyhorse

you are probably correct but that has nothing to do with the anti's agenda. Most of them dont give a shit about animals--its power and politics to them.

It would be more of a warning if it was a bunch of poachers being burned instead of the ivory. This would be particulary true if said poachers were still alive t the time.

Cross L, you are correct on that, I am just not sure anti's are involved in this in any way.

Mike Smith, I salute you Sir, that would send a clearer message.

The problem as I see it with any "legal" ivory sale is that it makes it harder to convict anyone overseas with possession of poached ivory.

It would become all to convenient for a Chinese or Vietnamese court to let off a smuggler by saying that "he didn't know that it was illegal ivory, he thought it was a legal product and let the guy off with a stern reprimand at most.

Remember that the asian cultures have a much longer tradition in the use of ivory for various reasons that objectively are pretty silly, but in their cultural context are no less real than the world being round.

Given that, I think the asian market would be next to impossible to saturate to the point of driving down prices to a point where poaching is not a problem.

Here's the problem; sell all that ivory at dirt cheap prices. Buyers make a huge profit as carvings and trinkets will still bring standard prices on the market, hell, a sharp salesman will raise the price claiming "Kenya ivory!" Once that stockpile is gone, it's right back to poaching. If you want to kill the snake, cut off his head, skin him and eat the meat. The slimballs that do illegal business in ivory, rhino horn, reptiles, birds and animals are not going away. Kill them, kill them all. Poison all the stockpiles of ivory and rhino horn and see how fast the trade shakes and trembles. Until International communities and leaders stop taking bribes and quit dicking around, this will never stop. I get sick of this and still it rolls right along.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
