I am talking to a few PHs' about hunting in Namibia this year and have been offered a couple of different dates and I don't know when the best time to go is.

This would just be a 7-10 day plains game hunt for Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra and whatever the PH thinks is the best of any other species to shoot. One place is west of Windhoek and the other is 200 km north.

I have been offered time periods from early May, then mid-late July and all of August.

When would be the best time to go?

Frank,

I was there in 2006 in mid May. The kudu rut was on but not in full swing........if your primary quarry is kudu, then try for the first two weeks of June.

August is the bloody coldest time of the year in southern nam Big Grin

Frank,

I was there June 12 to June 25 this past year. I hunted at Sesfontein(West of Etosha) and Grootfontein. That time of year is very comfortable, 75 daytime and 55 at night. My trip was timed to correspond to the dark phase of the moon. I ended up having a great hunt taking twelve trophies. Have a good trip.

I believe you can get a cheaper airfare in August before the 'hi' season sets in. I hunted last of August to 10th of September which is at the end of winter. Mopane trees were just budding so spotting game was easier than when the trees are leafed out. I thought it was very comfortable temp-wise. I hunted just south of Etosha Park and ~900 miles south, east of Keetmanshoop. Took 14 plains game animals. Best of luck to you.

May-August will be the most expensive as for airfare. April is fall, but can still be warm. If comfort is important (temps), anytime from late May until mid August should be fine. You can also get a discount if you hunt 2x1. You didn't say if Kudu were the #1 trophy on your list, but, you can find them anytime with a good PH. We hunt near Etosha. PM me if you have any specific questions.
Good hunting,
David

It used to be that you got lower airfare rates (shoulder season) if you left before June 1 but you should check with your travel agent. In any event it was only a savings of a few hundred dollars.

In 2005 I hunted the first two weeks of June and the weather was very pleasant. We were close to Etosha.

Frank,

I was west of Omaruru back in late May. Our group toured the country for 7 days and then hunted another 10 starting May 29th and we hit the Kudu rut perfectly. The Zebra were a bit spooky as the winds would randomly change directions several times a day and made the stalks very difficult. The elevation was about 5500 ft and the evenings were chilly but very nice. Only one day was what I would call overly warm. I would have no problems going again at the same time of the season.

Fjord, more importantly than the time, pick the right PH and outfitter. As an aside, I shot the biggest kudus in 2007 in Namibia in August and September. I shot quite a few nice ones in the rut period as well. (was May to June in our part.) See here for some of them-

Thanks guys for all the information. So June would probably be best for the Kudu rut but Kudu can be taken all winter long there. And the dark of the moon (as usual) is best overall.

Anyone else who outfits in Namibia please PM me your websites. I'll be glad to look them over before I make my decision.
