Yep, Dodge Power Wagon.

Trivia: This is one of 5 movies in which John Wayne wore his famous "Red River" belt buckle which was actually not his, but the Red River director's with whom he switched buckles. The buckle was stolen sometime around 1967 while at the jewler's being cleaned.

Like I said, too much time spent on movies!

I seem to remember a variety of vehicles with at least one Champ (bloody wonderful vehicle!) involved but get an idea they may well have had a Dodge in there as well.

The guy to ask would be Ken Stewart because (if I remember correctly) they were his vehicles....... and I think, also his animals.

I seem to remember he once told me they used the Willys Jeep & Landies as well but kept breaking the chassis on them.

FWIW, he & his wife Kathy were also involved in the making of Born Free.

It may have already been mentioned somewhere above but I recall seeing a movie as a youngster about a young boy whose parents were killed in a bombing raid (British Canberra bomber) on Cairo? during the Suez crisis and who made his way alone down to South Africa to an uncle/aunt who lived there. Was a great movie and it was probably this movie that kindled my interest in Africa.

The title may have been something like "Sammy(the boys name) goes South"

ALLEN W. JOHNSON - DRSS

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Steve:

The animal capture effort for the film Hatari was led by a character named Willy de Beer, and one of his employees was Jan Oelofse, who later used what he learned from Oom Willy to capture animals for Ian Player at two Natal National Parks reserves.

I don't remember all of the vehicles that were used in Hatari, but one of them was a Willys Jeep that Paramount Pictures gave Oelofse after filming ended. Oelofse told me he welded up a new body for the Jeep and drove it from Tanzania to Natal.

What I found interesting is that the segment that showed a net being shot over a tree, capturing dozens of monkeys, was shot in just one take, according to Oelofse. Jan and two other employees of de Beer then dressed up in makeshift "armor" and rounded up the monkeys while the cameras rolled.

Jan trained the baby elephants that were featured in the film, and it was he and not actress Elsa Martinelli those elephants were following while Henry Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk" music played in the movie.
