I have successfully hunter Rocky Mountain elk with 300 Win mag, 30-06 and .375 H&H. Now want to use my 7x57 Mauser with 160 gr Fail Safe. Question is whether the 7x57 can drive the bullet hard enough to properly open on elk? I really like the caliber and the bullet, but won't use it only to would elk. Thanks for all pertinent info.

One of my friends uses 160 grain Fail Safe's in his 7 Mag. He's taken a number of Elk sized African PG with it. No problems except on smaller antelope; it destroys a lot of meat and hide. Kudu, Waterbuck, Oryx etc., is perfect for this combination.
I've had very good luck with the Speer Grand Slam (see below) and Nosler 160 grain Accubond (pics on my web site). Winchester has ceased production of the Fail Safe and replaced it with the new XP-3.

Here's my 160 grain Grand Slam from a .280 at 575 yards on a mature Rocky Mountain Elk.

Entry was left shoulder, which broke upon impact.

Bullet traversed through the right shoulder muscle and exited. Due to the bullets energy being expended, it was snapped back into the wound channel by connective tissue, where I recovered it upon butchering. They were a favorite of mine until production of the Speer Nitrex cartridge ceased.

I know the 160 gr. GS Customs bullet will work on elk with perfection and its a hollow point monolithic..I have heard bad things about the failsafes, but I have never shot game with them so don't really know...

Shouldn't this be in the North American Hunting or medium bore forums? I thought Saeed and DRG want to keep topics somewhat related to the forum.

I am going to be using 175 grain Hornady round nose bullets in a 7x57 for plains game in Tanzania this summer. I think that if you are moving things along at less than 2650 fps, premiums do not have a whole lot more to offer than well made conventional bullets.

I shoot, and have shot a lot of barnes bullets in large calibers, but could not get them in any range from 140 to 160 grains to shoot well in my Ruger No. 1 7x57, hence the move to the Hornady selection. I went to the 175s to keep the velocity down. Hope this keeps us on topic.

I have used CT FailSafes (I believe we are talking about the same thing) in my 300WM in Africa. I thought that these were just Partitions with a moly coat. In any case they performed perfectly on plains game. I was unaware that they had to be driven at any particular velocity different from a normal partition. The regular partitions shoot very well from my 7x57R but at probably around 2400fps. The CT Failsafes (moly) do not shoot well in the 7x57R, at least not so far.

My first post here, re failsafe in 7x57, and I put it in the wrong forum. Have now posted it in North American Hunting. Sorry for that; I agree that related topics should be kept in the right forum. grey416

Inasmuch as it has to do with bullet performance I don't see that it makes a hell of a lot of difference..Any African hunter could well use some of the advise given..

I wouldn't use the FS in the 7x57. In my experience, it didn't open up on thin-skinned game when driven at magnum velocities. At 7x57 speed, you might be disappointed if you don't hit bone. In my opinion, there are too many other good bullets on the market to bother with the discontinued Fail Safe.

Thank you all for the counsel, and I will heed it. I'll use up my supply of FS on some Arizona rocks.

If you are just wantingto get rid of them,, hell I have some 7mm's I will trade you.

In fact I have a box of just what you probably do need in that caliber, 175 grain Grand Slams that I would trade.

They are indeed a great bullet in a non magnum caliber.
And yes the Failsafes are primarily a magnum high velocity round.
So let me know, I hate to see premiums wasted on rocks.
