Borrowed this from Ivan Carter. A frontal head shot on hippo.

That darkened area between the eyes. Triangle shaped.

On land at full charge. Wait for it to get within 5 feet.

I think this is what you want. I did it with a .375/.284 XP 100 handgun

Barnes TSX or solids will work. North Fork cup points.

Anywhere but out in the middle of the Zambezi. I learned that the hard way. Also, on a brain shot, a good premium soft point - Swift A-Frame or North Fork soft - will do the trick. I think Ian Gibson (Chifuti Safaris) agrees; enough penetration & also enough damage to do the job even on a near miss of the brain box.

I have shot 8 so far. All brain shots. 5 with Barnes solids and 3 with swift a frames. Both worked well

Hey Hitman, that shot looks to be maybe a sixteenth of an inch off of dead center. What happened, "hippo fever"?

I have shot lots of hippo from the front where the bullet never hit dead center.

It all depends on his head and which way he is standing.

I normally aim to get the bullet in the middle of a line that connects the ear holes.

It seems to work.

Nothing I've seen ever went very far with a
brain shot. Everyone has gone DOWN Right There.
Nice shot on that one. Was it on land? How close to the road?

Yup. Right between the eyes.

I shot this old, muddy bull right there with a 570 grain TSX.

He fell like a drunk on ice and, oddly, bled like this for twenty minutes before enough help arrived to roll him over.

JCS, give me a break. Shot was 129 yards. Not too bad for an ol' geezer with a handgun. I was shooting slightly up at him. PH didn't know handguns would shoot that far!

It was so close to perfectly dead center that I could not help myself. Great shooting!
