My wife has been with me 6 times to Africa, visiting Nambia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. She likes the comforts, but also enjoys the scenery, visiting all of the local sights, enjoying the local cusine, getting up close and pesonal with dangerous game when possible, taking school supplies for the village children, etc. etc. She is not a regular hunter, but she has managed to shoot a sable and a giraffe on a couple of the hunts that she has accompanied me on. She also likes meeting the people and learning about their customs and traditions. But, then again, she has traveled all over the world, seeing places that I have yet to visit, due to my long term African addiction.

Jim, I'm glad my wife & I had the opportunity to talk to you and Joyce. She had never been on a hunt, her idea of roughing it was a Hilton, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience with Andrew. Every day of the hunt she came along with us, giddy with excitement and taking lots of pictures. And, we are both looking forward to another African hunt.

That's so great to hear. Joyce's evolution from observer to huntress was a seamless course. You never know!!

We should chat again sometime. Would love to hear both of your stories of the hunt.

Count your blessings gentlemen....I have been informed by SWMBO that there is NO WAY she is gonna ride 14-16 hours on an airplane to go somewhere she never thought of going to do something she never thought of doing etc etc etc....if I ever get to go back, it will be alone again.....sigh

Truer words have never been spoken. Pieter knew that the Princess detests instant coffee so he had an ice chest that was her survival kit. He had loaded it with three blends of coffee, a french press, sugar, creamer, and an electric tea kettle. He also had a hair dryer, a power adapter, and a power strip so we could charge our devices in the chest.

I also appreciate someone that will keep her distracted when it comes time to settle the bill. No need worrying her with the details.

My wife has been to Tanzania, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. The PH's we have hunted with kept her involved and she has been a good sport. Trips to Nehimba and Vic Falls have helped.

Another fine lass stated 'she had not been that dirty since she was twelve'. The same lady could not figure out why it took so long to shoot one buffalo when there were so many of them?

My wife tells people that she married me because I take her hunting. We're still seeing if it will work out, it's only been 46 years. We call her "one shot" because she rarely ever shoots more than one shot at game and it's rarer still that the game isn't dead right there. Wish I could post pictures of her with some of the game she's taken including zebra,impala Gemsbok a very big Mule Deer and a 6x6 bull elk all in the past year.

She can't wait to go back to Africa and it isn't to shop.

This is an ironic topic in my husband's and my case. Although he introduced me to firearms, he was not a hunter, more a pistol/urban firearms guy. Once I got the hang of shooting, I wanted to go hunting. None of my family were hunters, I grew up a city girl albeit I had horses. I cannot explain the attraction. But the combination of outdoors, wild animals, tracking, camping and shooting just seemed to be the perfect combination.

I booked several guided deer hunts for myself before my husband joined me. It was so much more fun when he came along and he really got into it also. But, like many of the wives described in this thread, he didn't like going without the creature comforts. I drew him into more primitive hunts a little at a time.

After I made my first safari to Africa (Okavango Delta), which he had planned to go, but couldn't due to health reasons, he heard my tales of fantastic camps, five course meals, laundry service, en suite toilets, he couldn't wait to go. We've made 10+ safaris since then and he loved everyone of them. He was a trooper on Alaskan moose and caribou hunts, as well as horseback elk hunts, but trekking out before sunlight and pooping behind a bush have never been his preference.

He is still my favorite hunting partner!

18 years ago, I invited a friend to my house for dinner. She was skeptical about my cooking, and agreed to come because venison was on the menu. A few months later, she asked me if I would take her to Africa after our marriage. We have been there 3 times, and the only real complaint she has had is that the conditions are too civilized. A fourth trip is planned, maybe I can find a more rustic accommodation.

My wife came with me on my first, and so far, only safari last year in South Africa with Theo Demarillac Safaris. I fully expected that despite the accomodations that were available for non hunting spouses, that she would find herself bored by the mid point of the trip. She came with me on the afternoon of the first day while we were stalking impala, and impressed me with her ability to stay on point with the stalk and move quietly. She also accompanied me all day on the second day. After several blown stalks on Kudu, the focus of the trip, I stated that perhaps fewer pairs of feet moving through the brush, the better when it came to Kudu. Thankfully, she understood, and contented herself with riding in the safari truck, and hanging out with the camp manager, who was a gracious hostess. By the end of the safari, I realized that I would never be returning to Africa without her, as she had thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of being over there. Taking her was the best thing I could have done.

When I was married, my wife joined me on 3 safaris, once as fiancé and twice as wife. She even hunted a bit, taking nice kudu and sable. There are some great memories, like her getting chased up a tree by a buffalo bull and a scary encounter (for her) with a Black Rhino. She loved it and was fun to take along.

Haven't been to Africa in 6 years or married for 5, but in the early planning stages to go next year and my significant other will be joining me. Trip will probably be 2 weeks or so, with a week of things like Vic Falls, Cape Town or a luxury game park; and a week of hunting, somewhere comfortable for her.

My wonderful wife Carol is coming with me on what will be my last safari. We went to Namibia together and she enjoyed the experience , but Africa did not excite as much as I hoped it would. Since I am in my sunset years and working two jobs after retirement,I had to satisfy my African obsession. We were sitting in the back yard around thE fire pit when she says"do you want me Togo with you to Africa?"is the Pope a Catholic? is there a steer in Texas. Is there water in the Pacific Ocean? Well yes, so anyway we are on our way. Logistics are a minor problem but "Travels with Guns " and Ripcord have been incredibly helpful. Carol is now as as excited as I am to be going. She does not hunt but brings me incredible luck as she can spot game almost as well as the the trackers and she is much prettier. So now all I have to do is shoot straight and be able to walk long distances . Wish me hunters'sluck. Jerry Hoover
