Hello All, I'm a long time member but don't post much. Looks like my life long dream of hunting in Africa may become a reality. Here is the situation - my wife and I are going to Kenya to do a mission trip with our church in June of this year (near Kisumu), we'd like to add some time at the end of the mission to do some hunting. This trip is to celebrate both of us turning 40 and our 15th wedding anniversary. She would primarily be an observer but might decide to try her hand at an impala or something.

Obviously this presents lots of logistical challenges - for one getting from Nairobi to a hunting destination and two probably having a total of 7-9 extra days (post mission)to pull this off. To ease one burden, I'm thinking of using a camp rifle instead of my own. Tanzania is a dream but not likely for budget/time reasons. What would you recommend?

Plains game is probably the most likely focus given the parameters we are working with. So, what would you do? Agents (Mark, David, Wendell, others) I'd welcome posts here with options or a pm if that is better. I'm thinking South Africa or possibily Zim is best option?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts. Neil

Humani in the Save Valley Conservancy with /Roger Whittall Safaris is perfect for you and your wife. Great plainsgame hunting and you'll be able to view big game as well. Great first timer/family environment.

I hope you find what you are looking for, feel free to drop me a line if you need some more info.

I agree, fly to Zimbabwe and do a plains game hunt in the Save. They are having a hard time booking plains game hunts, now is a good time to look into it.

Neil,

we have a variety of options that would seem to suit you and your wife's needs. Limpopo Province of SA, the Tuli in BOTS, and KZN Province as well as Free State Province in SA. 7-9 days would be a very nice trip for the two of you.

Depending on what game you are looking at for your hunt, I'd suggest a two camp hunt. Starting in Free State and then moving to KZN or Limpopo. That way you get to see two vastly different areas of SA, and will hunt the game where God actually placed them rather than where we introduced them.

If you think you'd like to explore this more just drop me a mail. And, no matter what you decide, good luck with your mission and your hunt.

Using a camp gun is your best bet due to the time in Kenya.

I would also agree with the Save, IMHO it a much "wilder" experience than south africa-

South africa is much more civilized with some touristy type things to do for the wife, but if your main focus is wild africa and hunting Zimbabwe is the way to go. Go with a good outfitter there- Zambezi, Whittals, Glen Stockil, John Sharp are all good examples and you will definately not regret it. Some of the shadier operators in Zim however Roll Eyes it won't take much reading here to see what could possibly happen.

Also if David is willing to give you some advice I would definately listen to it - he is offering an unbiased opinion (or else he would of recommended Johnathon Cool only) from a guy who is right there in the middle of zimbabwe all the time. Can't beat that!

Wow - I knew I could count on you guys. Unbelievable response.

Is the Save doable without a charter? I've read all the reports from there but thought it might be out of my range for this kind of trip.

Thanks to all for the PM's I'll respond tonight (although before the Colts game!).

David Keith - small world, I live about a mile from Joe Robinson and know him well. Our kids are the same age....incredible, we were at his place sledding last weekend!

Neal

You might want to look at flights to Harare NOW before deciding for sure.
If travel through Johannesburg is required you may run into complications due to the World Cup hysteria.
There may be other routes however.
