**** Effective January 26, all airline passengers to the United States aged two years and older must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within three calendar days of travel. Alternatively, travelers to the U.S. may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel. Check the CDC website for additional information and Frequently Asked Questions.

CDC will consider individual waivers of this requirement in exigent circumstances where emergency travel is required to preserve health and safety (e.g., emergency medical evacuations) and where pre-departure testing cannot be accessed or completed before travel.

Although requests for a waiver that meet all the criteria will be given due consideration, the CDC expects that waivers will be rare.

To apply for such waivers, travelers or travelers’ carriers can contact the U.S. Embassy in Harare, or call the Department of State headquarters: From the United States and Canada: 888-407-4747; from overseas: 202-501-4444.

Country-Specific Information

Zimbabwe has 114,489 confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and 3,754 deaths as of August 5, 2021.
People must wear face masks in public and observe social distancing, defined as keeping a distance of at least one meter from any other individual.
On June 29, 2021, the Government of Zimbabwe announced the stricter COVID prevention measures:
Travelers arriving to Zimbabwe from countries with the Alpha and Delta variants of COVID-19, or those who transited such countries en route to Zimbabwe, will be quarantined at government appointed facilities at the traveler’s expense. These travelers will be tested for COVID-19 on the first, third, fifth, and tenth days at the traveler’s expense. The Alpha variant was previously known as the UK variant and the Delta variant was previously known as the India variant. To date, the Government of Zimbabwe has not specified which countries will fall into this category.
Businesses are to be open from 8AM to 3:30PM only.
A curfew is in place from 6:30PM to 6AM.
Businesses are to operate at a maximum of 25% of staff on site, with the rest teleworking.
Travel between cities is suspended, except travel that supports food and medicine production.
Restaurants are closed for eat-in service, but may serve take-away customers until 3:30PM
Hotel and lodge restaurants may offer dine-in service to residents of the hotel or lodge only.
Beer halls and night clubs are closed.
All gatherings, except funerals with 30 or fewer attendees, are banned.

COVID-19 Testing

Are PCR and/or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in Zimbabwe? Yes
If so, are test results reliably available within 72 hours? Yes
Below is the list authorized by the Government of Zimbabwe of assessed and certified medical Laboratories for SARS-CoV-2.
Note that this list of labs is different from the list of labs approved for the Trusted Travel Platform for COVID-19 tests that meet entry and exit requirements for Zimbabwe. More details on the requirements for COVID-19 tests for entry or exit to or from Zimbabwe is below in the “Entry and Exit Requirements” section.

Yes, at a cost.  Only public and private sites participating in the Government of Zimbabwe’s vaccination campaign are able to offer vaccines.
Which vaccines are available in Zimbabwe?
All of the vaccines listed above are available in Zimbabwe. If the traveler is entering from a country that is not part of the Trusted Travel Initiative, the traveler will upload their negative COVID-19 test result to org(account creation required). A Travel Code will then be generated for travel. Technical concerns may be directed to the dedicated support teams reachable via globalhaven@panabios.org.
Persons without a test result or displaying COVID-19 symptoms may be denied entry or detained until they can be tested for COVID-19.
If tested and found to be positive, travelers may be detained a government facility for 14 days.
Use of the Trusted Traveler Platform of approved labs is required for departure from Zimbabwe, even if your destination is not part of the platform. The Trusted Travel system will verify your results against the entry requirements for your destination.

Looks the same as what I went through. The quarantine question is a bit ambiguous- I was told that hunting camps qualify as quarantine during the planning stages- but the US wasn't treated as a problem.

I left just under a month ago, and got back a week ago today.

Really not that big a deal, just added 1 day to the trip.

The August 7 update specifies a 10 day quarantine, Covid testing within 48 hours of arrival, and again on the 3rd, 5th, and 10th day of quarantine. How’s that possible even assuming a hunting camp is an approved quarantine location? That’s my concern, in addition to what happens to hunters booked and air flights ticketed on 7 day hunts. The last thing I want is to step off the plane in Harare in a few weeks and find out officials are now enforcing mandates that are somewhat vague.

txsouthpaw,

I've inquired with my people in Zim to see how this is really playing out with arriving hunters. I suggest you contact your safari operator. Government information on websites can be notably different than what one may experience on the ground.

Unlike other websites, we have absolutely no problems with anyone quoting, or linking, to other websites.

Especially hunting and shooting websites.

The more of us out there the better.

How would the restriction on travel between cities work? Also, the cost of the tests would be a factor, $500 or $600. Oh well, I'm not going til next year and everything will be totally different.

I am just back from Zim. On arrival we needed a negative test and result less than 48 hours before departure from Dulles. On arrival the test result was checked before passports and Customs.

Leaving we flew into Harare early to get tested at a site that got us printed results 2 hours later. Had lunch at a hotel while we waited. Those test results were checked at the airport. no problems re Covid.

Ethiopian Air at Addis was a real cluster-f... But, that will be in another posting.

There are 4 PHs with COVID along with their 4 clients . The clients were put into quarantine “somewhere near Vic Falls.”

I am told quarantine sites are local hotels which are not bad at all .

Larry, if there are 4 PH's and 4 clients that have tested positive for Covid. I would be lead to believe that the camp has an covid out break.

How about the camp where the positive tests came from. I am sure that new incoming clients to these camps will also become covid positive after they are ready to depart.

All I can say is this is not a good outcome.

I do know that when I was working, being away for 2 weeks scheduled vacation was one thing, being away for a month or longer, I may not have had a job to return too.

In Zimbabwe, the internet is touch and go when I was there a few years ago, and from my Zimbabwe friends it is not much better today. Being placed in a quarantine hotel(s), may be fine for some and not so good for others. A person would be looking at an additional 10 to 14 + days away from home and at what expense.

They have police checkpoints that check your travel documents, including Covid test results. Tourism/safari operators are exempt from the travel restrictions.

I have been back a week. While we saw roadblocks , they never checked anything except for mask use. Of course , they may check other things at other locations.

I decided to travel by car to Harare from Dande East on 22nd. No one asked for papers, at one spot they sprayed something in the car but that had more to do with Tsetse flies than Covid.

Seeing that the Safari operators are exempt whatever restrictions they have are not germane to us.
