I just read an article in this month's NRA American Hunter entitled: A Win for International Conservation" which details the efforts of SCI at the Cites convention in March of this year wherein SCI's language on the definition of a sport hunted trophy was accepted over that of the USFWS and anti-hunting groups including the Humane Society International. The final definition of a sport hunted trophy now is: "The term 'hunting trophy' means a whole animal, or a readily recognizable part or derivative of an animal, specified on any accompanying Cites permit or certificate, that: i)is raw, processed or manufactured; ii)was legally obtained by the hunter through hunting for the hunter's personal use; and iii)is being imported, exported or re-exported by or on behalf of the hunter, as part of the transfer from its country of origin, ultimately to the hunter's State of usual residence." This language does away with the overly restrictive definition of the USFWS and should now allow us to bring items made from sport hunted trophies outside the United States into the country without worrying about seizure and destruction of trophies. Congratulations to SCI for fighting for hunters. Big Grin

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

As we all were too aware, the USFWS had really cracked down in the past on items made from sport hunted trophies from Africa and other parts of the world, confiscating items and causing all kinds of hell with hunters. This was an issue that some of us raised at SCI's Continuing Legal Education Seminar held in January in Reno with the lawyers from SCI, the reps of the USFWS and others. Hopefully we will all now be able to have items made in Africa and other parts of the world from our sport hunted trophies without fear of confiscation and confrontation with the USFWS. It was certainly good news to me when I read about it! tu2

It is unfortunate that we find ourselves pitted against the USFWS more of the time than siding with them or they with us. Without the sportsman/conservationist involved in domestic and international hunting and conservation projects, their agency would diminish in importance, their employee numbers dwindle and they would eventually be merged with another obscure agency in the DOI counting widgets or grasshoppers. Still they tend to be mindless bureacrats checking for minute inaccuracies and misspellings in paperwork, all to quick to send back shipments or confiscate trophies and not recognizing the forests for the trees.

But as I try and make sense out of our government, I grow more disconsolate and confused every day. A government by and for the people... right? Three cheers for SCI on this win!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Saw the article and couldn't agree more on a great victory for our side. Since this accomplishment is pretty much "Africa" in nature, should be a pretty good indicator of the fact that SCI does indeed do good things for Africa however contrary to some beliefs and posts by some on AR. Roll Eyes

Just further proof that SCI does a lot to help us hunters and ramps up the fact we need to keep the support coming. Don't let the occasional "bad apples" that come along to any large organization be a reason to look the other way. That's my SCI sermon and I am sticking to it. tu2

Matt - You are totally correct and it's sad that OUR groups (SCI - NRA) and the like have to keep constant pressure on USWF to uphold their end of things. Everyone working together would be a whole lot simplier and easier wouldn't it?

If that was the language that was passed and the USFWS had input, I would be hard pressed to believe that they will not be required to follow it. But again, you can never be sure with any governmental agency. I do know that if they don't follow or honor it that it would give SCI, the NRA, John Jackson and others some very good ammunition for a lawsuit.
