Not that it has anything to do with the topic... but you are saying that you are unsafe carrying your rifle in this 'African carry'. Best not be projecting this on to others.

So listening to the voice of experience, in your experience do most PH's not use African carry? The trackers are generally always in front of them.

Have yet to hear of a PH shouldering his rifle in the "African carry" method plugging a tracker.

If carried properly, the barrel/s are away and at an angle to whoever might be in front and the carrier, whose eyes are looking ahead, should make minor adjustments if a body lines up with the barrels.

The hand holding the rifle is gripping it by the barrel/s, well away from the trigger and engaged safety - the chances of an AD are therefore extremely unlikely.

As far as propping the rifle pad down and hand covering the muzzle,(negative comments notwithstanding) there are photos of posters on this site doing so with a smug look on their face yet nobody has commented/reprimanded or possibly have not noticed but quite likely did not want to upset their friend or fellow poster. We can make as many excises as we can about carrying a rifle on safari.

The safest way is to carry it on your shoulder with a sling, pointing upwards.

Trouble is, that is fine as you are walking.

But, when one has to be ready, the rifle is in the hand, pointing somewhere.

And at one point or another, that rifle IS going to sweep across someone.

This is just a fact of hunting, and denying it is not going to make the danger go away.

One has to be aware of it, and make sure that the safety is on, and finger off the trigger.

Having said that, I am sure there will be situations where things do not go to plan, and things will go wrong.

Voice of experience.

Mike,

I presume lavaca is not a PH? I do not know him from a bar of soap but from what I have read he has done a lot of hunting and enjoys a traditional safari experience in what we call old Africa. In his many travels he has learnt what I deem as good gun manners and I would be very happy to have him on my back.

Of course now and again I carry my double on my shoulder as the bloody thing is so damn heavy. However when in cover or pursuit the gun is loaded and in hand.

We all sweep and most are aware of it and do our best not point.

I ask all my hunters not to load unless necessary and some have argued otherwise and that is all fine and then they can simply take up the front or move to one side. But what I do not tolerate is a loaded gun behind me not knowing if the safety is on or off, which as we have seen is an accident waiting to happen.

Stu is lucky to survive this incident and we are all very happy that he has made such a remarkable recovery. Some PHs, trackers and apprentices have not been so fortunate.

Once again, cheers to Stu. I'd hate for him or his father to see where this thread went.

African Carry wasn't the cause of his accident.

Please start, or revive, an African Carry thread to discuss said method.

No one said it was, unsafe handling of a firearm was the "cause" of this accident, which "African carry" is the most common example many here partake in. Oops, didn't mean to detract from your thoughtless condescension with a relevant point. Roll Eyes
