Veterinarian Andre Uys: Third accused in rhino poaching syndicate arrested in Musina

A third accused in an alleged rhino poaching syndicate was arrested in Musina, Limpopo. Andre Uys, a wildlife veterinarian from Thabazimbi, appeared before a Musina magistrate on charges relating to the de-horning of white and black rhinos without a permit.

Uys is a 38 year old well known and respected wildlife veterinarian in the Thabazimbi area. He was released on R10 000 bail, which he promptly paid. His bail conditions include that he must hand over his passport, may not change his fixed address, may not interfere with state witnesses and must report to the police every week.

It is alleged that Uys and his two co-accused, Jacques Els from Thabazimbi and Tom Fourie from Musina, dehorned 15 rhinos on the Maremani Game Reserve outside Musina in October 2009. Fourie, who was the manager of the reserve, committed suicide last year. It is believed that Uys tranquilized the rhinos and dehorned them.

Uys' case has been postponed to 18 March. Jacques Els was charged with illegal trading in rhino horns during his court appearance last year and is currently out on R30 000 bail. He will appear in court on the 28th of this month, when his case will also be postponed to 18 March.

Is it possible he dehorned those Rhino to prevent their killing by poachers? It is common practice in some areas of Zim to dehorn them. I can only suspect the motive was to sell the horn but I'd rather see them dehorned than dead and dehorned...lying the bush to rot. Not defending anything I know zero facts about, just curious.

I don't know, but Tom Fourie didn't kill himself for no good reason... if it was a suicide.

Guys,

my info is that Uys dehorned the animals on the orders of the ranch, and thought that the owners and he had the paperwork in order. Unfortunately nobody had arranged the TOPS permit side of things which is where Uys should presumably have known better.
The paperwork was supposedly in place for the ranch to store the horns, but the manager tried to sell some of them on the black market and so the rot started.

paperwork, papperwork, paperwork.

it appears on the surface that this guy was trying to do the right thing and got caught up in the normal african paper work snafu. I would rather see the Rhino dehorned and alive like others here have stated.
