I recently ordered Into The Thorns By Wayne Grant and I am only a quarter way in and I am beyond hooked. As a lover of leopard hunting and having some experience with this great cat including hunting him, videoing him, and writing about him myself, I must say this is the work of a true leopard expert. Wayne's primary focus is on the big cattle killing cats in the Matobo region of Zim, and he brings a hell of a writing style that is born out of his obvious passion for, and expertise in hunting this great cat. I have run with some pretty good leopard men like Dawson, Dugmore,Harland and recently Vallaro to name just a few, but I would dearly love to share a blind with Wayne one day.If you have, or want to hunt leopard, I think you will really enjoy the read. Andrew Dawson turned us onto it, a pretty big compliment as he says it is a 'must read". From what I have read so far, he is spot on! Have you guys read it, and if so your thoughts?

It's my favorite hunting book, and I believe I have read it four or so times. My dream leopard hunt would be to hunt with Wayne in the Matobo, but your recent hunt report has me considering Nuanetsi.

Dave,

Wayne gave me that book at an SCI show a few years back. I agree with you, one of the best ever written on leopard.

We booked a hunt with wayne for later that year - he delivered on a monster tom on the 4th night. He knows what he is doing, no doubt.

Cheers-

I have had an autographed copy of the book from Wayne since it was first published. tu2 It sits next to my personal chair in my African trophy room at home. I have read it three times. Wayne is, and has been one of THE definitive authorities on Leopard hunting in all of Africa. I was so impressed with it, that I bought a second copy and had Wayne autograph it for my Leopard PH and Wayne's personal friend, John Hunt of Georgia Safaris. Big Grin

I had the privilege sitting on the bank of Chenji in Chewore South for several nights with Wayne discussing about every topic under the sun...a fine fellow.

Funny as heck that you should say that. As soon as I heard "Into the Thorns" and "Buzz" in the same sentence all that I could think was that it would never work with Buzz's mankini or his diaper.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

It's a great book. I'm leaving 1 October on my first leopard hunt -- Tanzania -- no lights, no night hunting. Still, I learned a lot.
